Machinist's helper

Here is a tool I made to help swap the vise jaws on my milling machine:

I started with a part from a place I used to work at (the top in the photo)

Cut it apart (2nd in the photo)

Part it off at the end of the knurl. Bore the inside to fit my Allen wrench (will fit 5/16"-3/8") and press in a stub wrench. In tight spaces it works to turn an SHCS in or out. In my case it works well when changing vise jaws.

I have several of these available if anyone is interested (cut in two, ready to finish). Free, just send me a SASE.

Mike

Re: Machinist's helper

Very cool tool, Mike. As a machinist for 42 years and a shop owner, I have all kinds of fun little timesavers like that. I've used a short piece of hex stock to get those pesky vice jaw screws out but never added the knurled handle. Nice!

Here's what I do:

Re: Machinist's helper

wish I had the access to do some of that oh ya and the time. you guys would have a field day at a friends shop that does stainless for the airline industry and anything else. I watched him wire cut a universal out of titanium and build a half shaft for a 907 one day.

Oh I cant touch anything because even if I do he redoes it. I have fun with him on that and his employees get a kick out helping me.

next time you use a toilet in a airliner its a way more complicated system then you think.
