Ski industry consolidation continues with a shoutout to JoeH

The big gun was the fight over Deer Valley, which Vail won, but here in NM we're seeing similar movement. Taos was bought last year and the new owner is pumping money into it, though not to everyone's approval as he added a lift to the formerly walk-up 12,000 Kachina Peak. Now, the managing partner of Sipapu, perhaps the smallest area in the state, buys Durango and Flagstaff fresh after signing the operations contact for the ski area in Los Alamos. Common thread in the NM deals? Snow-making and lots of it. Both new owners committed to improving snow-making at their new areas.

Taos, btw, has free overnight camping. Santa Fe, too, but we're not a resort so it's just you and the stars. Pajarito (Los Alamos), as well, IIRC.

Re: Ski industry consolidation continues with a shoutout to

Interestingly enough, our new neighbor here in boulder is a new exec with vail associates and worked on putting the deal together to acquire park city, not sure they have gotten deer valley yet? But I know they want it, along with the canyons. Word is they want to connect the 3 to make one big mega resort....

Some of our local ski areas have been purchased by corporations too. Lots of downside, but there is a silver lining - when they build bigger lodges and more bars, it takes people off the hill...

all these purchases are interesting.

i just cant justify what they are charging for lift tickets anymore. we bought splitboards and have been learning the local backcountry. one of the main reasons for building a campervan

Re: Ski industry consolidation continues with a shoutout to

Here in Flagstaff we're not sure exactly what the downside (if any) to the purchase. We're friends with the general manager but inside info has not been forthcoming. The new owner is keeping the same management in in place and snow making is on-going with reclaimed water.

The mtn bike community is stoked because Pajarito has lift-served access and dh trails. Snowbowl to date has not embraced the idea. Too many years of lawsuits with the Tribes over snowmaking has had management a bit gun shy.
