Dispersed / remote camping sites in Mt Baker NF?

I'd like to try and find some good camping spots in Mt Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest. I know of the campsites along the Mountain Loop Highway near Granite Falls, but I'd like to get away a little bit and find some good dispersed camping in the forest - something that I can get the van into.

Does anyone have any specific recommendations? They'd be greatly appreciated! On my own, I'm happy to fart around searching for the sites... but with two toddlers in tow, we don't yet have that liberty!!

Cheers,
Mike.

Granite Falls Camping is going to be hard to find in secluded areas and quite honestly a little bit risky considering the huge amount of meth production in that area. As you head deeper toward Monte Cristo, past Verlot there are a few access roads and what not that have selective camping. In Monte Cristo there are many more places you can explore, and of course as you head north toward darrington and around Lake Cavanaugh you will find places.

I would be surprised if you found anything good directly around Granite Falls though. The water fall it self is cool though. Oh and hiking along the Robe Canyon is awesome, you can read a bit about the river here. http://professorpaddle.com/rivers/ri...sp?riverid=627

Thanks Professor! I had no idea about meth production, something I would never have figured! From what you suggest, and from what I've read elsewhere, I'd have better luck entering the Forest from the Darrington end of the Mt Loop Highway. I'll try that next time...

yea from the north is much better. I boat robe canyon quite frequently and when I am out there we always drive well past verlot into the NF and then were just camping at pull outs by the river that are roadside. After silverton you will start to see more popping up but the goods are between Darrington and Monte Cristo ... Check out the Ice caves while you are there, its pretty neat.

Re: Dispersed / remote camping sites in Mt Baker NF?

Ice caves? tried the link and it was dead. I too was looking for some dispersed camping for this coming weekend with my little man. So am I to understand there are quite a few pull outs after Darrington along mountain loop HWY? Sounds like my cup of tea, camping a river close by, a fire to enjoy and showing my son the fun of nature.

Any ideas as to where along Mountain Loop to park the SMB and enjoy the river for a few days?

Anyone have some suggestions? Maybe near a river or nice lake to do some exploring with a five a year?

Definitely not dispersed but a good time, I stopped at two different camp sites this weekend driving towards dry weather. Left Bellingham in the poring rain and found Early Winters to be my favorite. Yes it's right next to HWY20 but the campground is on top of the creek. So much that by early evening that's all you hear is the creek. Small intimate place to stop, easy to find, $8 for a ring, picnic table, pit toilet and running water in a few spots. Easy run to Winthrop too - which was a real neat little themed town. My five year old thought it was cool and we left the place calling it cowboy town.
