Re: Where does your dog ride?

Our dogs are not invited in the van. In the Bounder they are all over the place.

Re: Where does your dog ride?

I'm sorry in advance because I know that this is going to rub some of you the wrong way, but I have never been comfortable with animals (including children) roaming free and unrestrained in moving vehicles.

When I travel with my dogs, they are in appropriate sized kennels or carriers, that are secured to the vehicle. It is for my safety, my animals safety and the safety of others - and I am by no means an overly protective safety-phobe. I do stupid things all of the time.

I am especially troubled by people that have animals in their laps and hanging out the window while driving - you think texting is distracting... the animals block side mirror visibility, forward visibility, steering ability...

In the event of an accident, Airbags can easily kill or badly hurt animals not secured by a restraint system. An 65 lbs dog sitting on the back seat is going to be a danger to passengers and the dog. You would not drive around with an unsecured spare tire sitting right behind you...

If "dogs are people too" then they need a seat belt!

Re: Where does your dog ride?

My little guy (Buddy) uses a dog seatbelt that I purchased from Amazon.

In the pic below, we were on our way to get a harness instead of a collar so that he can ride more safely.

I was glad to read about the harness. My 1st reaction to the picture was: "That dog won't get any impact injuries, just a broken neck."

In the event of a head on collision our dogs probably will die of impact injury - from hitting us in the back of the head and breaking our necks.

Personally, I'm just going to try to avoid head on collisions and hope for the best but after my wife reads this, our next trip will probably feature a new harness and restraint system. She's the safety officer on this crew.

I got both Lucky and Sammy as rescue dogs a year or so ago. They both were owner-surrenders so their names were known and passed along. Reportedly, Lucky has jumped out of the back of a moving Jeep twice and a SUV once, surviving and recovering each time. I look to avoid having him test his name further this way and don't leave windows open enough for him to try again.

For those looking to buy a in-car restraint harness for their dog, this Harness Crashworthiness Study Summary Report is worth reviewing: http://centerforpetsafety.org/wp-conten ... 101113.pdf

Harnesses were static tested and crash-tested using crash test dog-dummies in 3 sizes. Most of the tested harnesses did not do well but one did.

We normally fight to see who has to ride shotgun. (normally rides in a dog bed passenger seat, or lap of wife.

Tooey, That's Eddie, a poodle/terrier of some sort blend.
