custom roof on Express van

I have a fibreglass hightop roof that i would like to cut a 5foot by 6 foot hole in and build something simular to a penthouse roof but smaller so i could close it to keep the rain out .
If anybody know of a simular project could you post a link.
Thanks so much.

You seem like the adventurous type, so what about an early Volkswagen pop-top:

I am not sure how you would adapt it to fit the contours of your existing roof though.

Re: custom roof on Express van

superdog new on this site, but i had the same problem.solved it with a section of a truck topper picked up on craigslist.made a frame that matched roof line transferred shape to section of topper with cardboard template.glassed on 1x2 inch frame to pop up to fasten material to. material is water proof outdoor cushion fabric.two hinges on front held up with one rod at rear.weight about 20 pounds.
this works for use (two people 1 cat)gives us a space to stand move around and gives a lot of fresh air to inside.also have roll down flaps with velcro to cover windows in top.total cost?under $100 all labor by me!
maybe this will give you some ideas.

Re: custom roof on Express van

superdog,no build pictures, just a few finished ones you should be able to figure out!
frame material is birch hardwood inside and outside frame glued together then screwed together then coated with epoxy paint frame finished size inside is 32"x48".
top was cut to shape and frame glassed to top before roof was cut.
material is stapled to frame then finish strip screwed to trim.
top held up with 1/2" tubing slides over pin on roof then held with clip at bottom.
interior of van is finished with indoor/outdoor carpet over 1/8" ply over r-13?insulation.
the only limit on top size would be the fit of top to van.i went with size as we only needed room to stand dress cook and move around, also i wanted to leave enough room for solar etc.
hope this gives you some ideas.
