2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

I have used the search but I am a bit confused, any recommendations on shock replacement (front and rear) for a Sportsmobile 4x4? I found a lot of information regarding Quigley set-ups and those with Deavers in the rear, but not much for a stock set-up. I have the spec sheet for my 2006 and a local shop stocks OME. Not sure if I should switch to Bilsteins and if so want to make sure I get the correct shock as the shop is not familiar with SMB's and it seems others have had significant troubles finding the correct shock. I have a request into SMB to see what they recommend as well. Thanks for the help.

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

In the past SMB used ARB OME (Old Man Emu) shocks that from what I was told were specifically valved for thier conversions. Nobody seems to like them from some of the posts I've read, but I never really had a problem. Springs were another issue and after going with Deaver Springs on my 06, Bilsteins were installed. SMB should be able to give you the answer.

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

If I remember reading posts correctly you have to do some bracket welding work to get Bilsteins to fit right. At least I think that is what some of the Deavers customers have done.

Why do you think you need new shocks... just curious.

Also what shop are you getting the work done at?

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

Roonie,

I am at about 107K, the front of the van is "bouncy" sometimes at freeway speeds. Further, I need new ball joints / tie rods and Peter at Sportsmobile recommended taking it to 4Wheel Parts, a chain 4x4 shop with an outlet in Lynnwood. They gave it the once over and said the front shocks and rear shock bushings need replacing. I knew it was coming and am happy I found someplace other than the dealer to have work on the 4x4 components. I have not heard back from Sportsmobile with their recommendation on shocks and am waiting for the quote from the local guys. I will keep you posted.

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

Let me know how the work goes. I would like to find a place to do 4x4 work on the SMB locally. Also let me know how the shock replacement goes and what you end up with. Good to have the info for when it is my turn to do the same.

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

I heard back from Sportsmobile. They are currently using the Rancho 9000 (RS 999001 XL front and RS 999179 XL rear) which is an adjustable shock and will bolt on without any modifications. This is a shock that 4Wheel Parts stocks and currently has a $100 rebate if you buy four. Also got some updated part numbers for Ball Joints if needed. I should have the work done in the next couple of weeks and will let you know how it goes. I have my fingers crossed.

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

Just curious, did you tell them you have a older rig with the original spring pack that's different from what they are now running?

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

I did let them know it was a 2006, should I follow-up with that question? Thanks.

Re: 2006 SMB 4x4 Shock Replacement

I had Rancho 9000's on my van. Switching to Bilsteins made a big improvement in the ride.
