2700 mile trip in an unknown van...what else to replace?

So I just bought this 97 quigley E250 5.4 in Baltimore...only problem is I live in Los Angeles.

I'm flying out next week to drive it 2,700 miles back. The van has 180k and a solid case of the dw according to my friend who picked it up for me.

I'LL HAVE A FULL OPEN CARGO SPACE IF ANYONE WANTS HAVE ME BRING PARTS OUT TO THE WEST COAST

I'm gearing up for a quick day of maintenance in baltimore before I hit the road and wanted to see if there is anything i'm missing in terms of service and replacement.

Current List of Service/Parts/Tools:

Drive Train:
Change oil and replace with Valvoline Max Life
New Plugs
New Wires
New Air Filter
New PCV Valve
New Fuel Filter (if there is an inline frame mounted one)
Run Diagnostic to Check for Codes
Have Trans Serviced/Flushed
Check U-Joints and Repair if Worn (otherwise carry spares)
Check All Other Fluids

Suspension/Brakes
Replace Track Bar Bushings
Replace Front and Rear Shocks with Bilstein 5100's
Might Get an Alignment
Replace Steering Stabilizer if Time and Ability to Source one Permits (anyone know a bilstein PN?)
Replace Inner and Outer Wheel Bearings
Replace Brake Pads (know they are worn)
Check Ball Joints and Tie Rod Ends
Spanner Check Suspension Mount Bolts

Tools
Large Socket Set
General Assorted Tool Box
D44 Hub Tool
Code Scanner
BFH, Zip Ties, Bailing Wire, Duct Tape & Tie Downs
Sleeping Bag & Bottle of Whiskey

Any other thoughts? I know I'm probably forgetting something.

Thanks.

Tim

Hi;

Having done such a trip I would add:

-check the tires for damage and age
-a handful of assorted fuses and one spare relay
-coil of speaker wire- useful anywhere on a vehicle in an emergency
-large water container that can be filled from a ditch
-gas can as gauges are unreliable until tested by running the tank down
-check rad for clogging- it still might make it back if the weather is cool
-cell phone
-another bottle of whiskey or perhaps small cooler of beer for overcoming minor emergencies
-a copilot

Best of luck! Take photos and post a trip report.

Regards,

Gavin

Might want to make sure you have flairs, reflective triangles, etc in case you do break down. Chances are Murphy will be a copilot and if it happens it won't be in a great place. Take care.

You want to make sure the DW is gone.

Read this thread:

If I was going to drive across country in a van that has had DW, I would check everything and then install the dual steering stabilizers. There are a couple of choices of kits and they work!

Make sure the jack and the handle are on board as well as the tire iron. Oh yea, air up the spare. Is there a spare?

You'd be an hour from the Quigley factory and they would do a spec and check, I believe, if you're interested.

Route 83 North to Exit 24. Turn right and go to 1st light. Turn left onto PA Route 181 (North George St). At McDonald's traffic light make a right onto Sunset Drive. Quigley Motor Company is on the left.

Re: 2700 mile trip in an unknown van...what else to replace?

Take a car hauler along with you, bouncing behind. So when you do break down you'll be able to pull the van up onto it and just hitch/hike a ride with someone else's truck...

Seriously, don't over-think it. It will be an adventure. As long as you have the whiskey, all will be well. Have a great trip. If you are going through Albuquerque, NM I'll give you a parking spot next to my 95 Quigley, a shower and a bed.

BTW I bought my '95 from the frozen North a couple of years ago and brought it back here after a basic mechanical and fluids check. Thank god the heater worked as it was not something that had been checked and it was might cold in January in Minnesota.

Thanks for all the advice guys, some really good suggestions. Think I may try and swing by Quigley. I'll keep you all posted.
