33" Tires with 3.73 and V10??

I would love to have some more opinions on this as it keeps nagging me. I have googled this numerous times, but can't really get any satisfaction.

John at Agile offered me the option to keep my 3.73 or move up to 4.10 with the upgrade. Keeping the 3.73 is a little less expensive as he would just do the front end to match. I plan on putting a 33" tire on it.

My usage will mostly be highway miles with dirt roads and snow thrown in there. I don't intend to get into heavy 4x4 or tow anything heavy either. My thought is to keep the revs down and get decent fuel economy. I really want a well behaved highway vehicle that can handle some snow and beat up dirt roads.

I have a few months until the 4x4 goes in. But I would hate to regret my decision. John seemed to think that the 3.73 with 33" tires was a good combination and had just done one when we were going back and forth.

Thoughts??

I have the 3.73s with a 265/70-17 tire on my 02 v10/4r100 and would certainly say that changing the gears to 4.10s or numerically higher would be beneficial on or offroad. The V10 platform is tuned to make peak torque and peak hp so high in the RPM sweep that most city and highway driving feels very lazy and uninspired. Adding the taller tires raises the effective gear ratio of the vehicle (thus reducing engine RPM for a given speed). My personal take on it says that without the 5-Star tuner the stock package is intolerable. Lower gears would keep the engine speed up and would keep the down-shifting to a minimum allowing the torque to actually be used. I've spent lots of time trying to get out of it, but I will be changing the gears and locker in mine asap to actually make use of the V10 under the hood.

Keep in mind this is with the 4r100 4 speed trans. The 05-current came with the 5 speed 5R110 trans that is much better.

I'll say that it's a 2013 van with the 5 Speed, not sure if there's a big difference between that and the 2002 V10. It feels pretty peppy with the stock 245 tires, but it's an empty shell right now.

I would agree that with the stock tires they are much happier! Contact 5-Star and order up a tuner; I would consider it one of the most useful purchases I have made. For your van, Ford tuned the 5R110 to not actually use all 5 gears for a given sequence. The tuner allows the use of all 5 gears without skipping which keeps the engine properly loaded through the usable range.

Does the skipped gear feel like a double shift?? In certain situations if I let off it seemed to upshift twice rapidly into 5th, basically skipping 4th. I guess i could just keep it in tow/haul and wind em out!

I definitely have been thinking about the tuner. Might be a bit down the road for me. I have a very needy van.

I like my 5 speed v10 with 3.73s, the only reason I would go with the 4.10s is if I was gonna put 35s on. I would leave the 3.73s because cruising on the freeway is beautiful with the 33s and I would contact 5 star to get a tune.

I have 4.10's with a V10 and torqshift. I think its the right gearing for me. It's a stock passenger interior van so no heavy build and the only thing I occasionally tow is my tent trailer.

Some people like the 3.73's and others think 4.10's (or lower) is better. I think for a lot of highway driving, 3.73's would be fine and you could eek out that extra 0.4 mpg.

Did those 4.10s come with a locker in the rear? Do you have a semi float rear?
