Another option if you think 285's just look too thin.. 32.8 inch(285x16x75) is approximately the same size as the 33's (305x16x70)... 305's are just wider. 33's have been a sweet spot for me also.

I would love to go to 35's but I agree with the CON's of the 35's..

I also went with the 285 75 16. Perfect fit for me. I am still loving the Dura tracs. It still have not put on thousands of miles, but cannot come up with a complaint yet!

Re: 35's vs 33's

I was surprised to learn the 315 only weighs 5 lbs more than a 285 (E load range) tire according to the BFG web site. Thought it would be more, but losing 20 lbs of unsprung weight is always good.

Two more benefits to a smaller tire are: 1) You can open the rear door without having to undo the Aluminess spare tire carrier, and 2) more suspension articulation before the tire hits things (e.g., the fenderwells, Bushwacker flares, etc.). My 315s rub the wheel wells/fender flares in the rough stuff.

One benefit the Badgers noted when they went to 37-inch tires from 285s was a noticeable increase in ride quality both on and offroad. A 315 aired down should provide more "cush" on washboards than a 285.

Our Quigley van came with 225/75-17 tires and stamped steel rims from Ford and it looked ridiculously wimpy lifted with fender flares. Skinny little black donuts stuck in massive wheel wells. I'm afraid you won't like the way your Sporty looks going from 315s to 265s. I think 285s or 305s would be a better compromise. You may see an mpg increase on the freeway with smaller tires.

I debated 35s vs 33s when we got our van and macho won out. I'd have probably been happier with the 33s, but the 35s look great, do very well offroad, and don't have any noticeable wear after 15K miles. Having bought tire chains for all 4 wheels and the speedo/computer reprogrammed for 35s will make me hesitate to switch sizes when these tires wear out.

Re: 35's vs 33's

I wanted to go with 35s but the Deavers already put my steps uncomfortably high, and between expense and fitting in the garage I went with larger (wider) 33s. Going from the 285/75/16 to a 315/?/16** (305/70/16) gave me more tire without additional height (well except over the worn out BFGs).

All the drawbacks, none of the advantages! But they look good, right?

Do you think the 305's would have problems with the larger width tire hitting the flairs in a tight turn on my 06 SMB conversion?

Re: 35's vs 33's

I went with 315's after having 285's on for a bit after we bought our van. I feel the van rides better now with the 315's on, not as harsh. I also like the added ground clearance.

Re: 35's vs 33's

They rub but I haven't had any problems from it. Of course I went Deavers before tires so I have some clearance over stock SMB4x4. I just put a pic up in another thread that shows kind of how the tires sit on the 16x8 rims: (and incidentially looked up the actual size 305/70/16)

Re: 35's vs 33's

I may wait but the real question is could you run the 305's and a single 285 as a spare? I might go about the change slower and my trailer has 285's that serve as spares in a pinch. I wouldn't want to screw with the diffs but if they are the same height there shouldn't be a problem. You think?

Re: 35's vs 33's

Definitly. Diameter is all that matters and that only when:
1. in 4wd when there is no slippage to compensate
2. limited slip or locker on the axle
or
3. long term application (wears out steering, abnormal tire wear etc.)

As far as I know those are the only issues, and that's with differently diameter tires... well, everything except don't mix bias-ply and radials!

Re: 35's vs 33's

Cool. I like the wider stance even though it's not much. But Deavers are well down the road. I have a few more irons in the fire.
