That's what I'm thinking. I'm not a big Sprinter fan but I'm glad that they're offering the 4x4 here for the Sprinter owners and enthusiasts. I also hope this will pressure Ford to offer at least the AWD version, if not true 4x4 for the upcoming Transit. Of course, if Ford does decide to do that, it probably won't be available until the 2016 model year.

Quigley had announced earlier that they were researching a 4x4 conversion for the Transit too.

I have done a lot of reading on the Sprinter and was surprised at the number of harsh reviews from owners. Even adjusting for internet negative bias, the views were critical.

Re: 4x4 Sprinter for US in 2015

I drive a 144" wheelbase Sprinter at work. The first time it snowed, when the van was new, I could barely get out of the neighborhood. We put snow tires on (don't remember which ones) and the Sprinter goes anywhere. With the snows, it is a tractor! The stock tires really seem to be expediter, high mileage tires. it'll be interesting to see how the 4x4 version does. Switching tires is a pain, but looks like it will be a lot more budget conscious than the 4x4.

This was a snowy winter here in Michigan and driving the Sprinter with snows had me strongly considering snows for my ford. Hopefully, next winter my van will see a lot more sitting and a lot less salt.

Maybe it will be a better base to start from, i.e. the aftermarket builders will be able to upgrade some of the stuff to make it more offroad worthy.

Or maybe it will make it MORE difficult to do that. Probably depends on the details of the components.
