Buying new wheels and tires, what to do with old set??

I am buying a new set of wheels and tires. My current wheels are the stock steel wheels 8x6.5 bolt pattern. My current tires are 5 year old BFG KO2's 285/75/R16. They have anywhere from 1/4" to 3/16" of tread left on them, depending on where on the tire(shoulders are obviously worn a bit more than the middles)and minimum tread depth allowed is 2/32" so there is still a lot of life in the tires. As a reference a new KO2 tread depth is about .45".

Is there a market for used tires like this?? I'd hate to give them to Discount tire if someone could use them. Can I get $$$ for a set of 4 used tires and wheels??

Just looking for some general advice before scheduling with DiscountTire.

Thanks!

I'd go to at least a 17" wheel - postures you down the road if you ever decide to do a big brake upgrade. As far as trying to sell your existing set; I never fancy the ordeal which ensues from all the inquiries so I'd just offer them up to another that may find benefit and be done with it...IMHO

I'd put them on your local Craigslist/Marketplace/etc for a few bucks. I sold my stock steel wheels with no-name (but still ~70% tread) 245 all season tires for $100 and was glad to have sent them to a good home. I'd probably start at around $200 for your bigger BFG's, depending on how long you're willing to sit on them (cheaper moves faster.) I've given away many pairs/sets of 3 good offroad tires and the youngsters on a shoestring budget have always been happy to receive them, and I feel better about that than sending them to the recycler (which may even charge extra since they're on wheels.)

What are you replacing them with?

I am going 17” AR172’s with 285/70r17 KO2’s. Was looking at the Nitto Recon or Ridge Grapplers but neither is snow rated. That only left the Terra Grapplers and they seemed similar enough to the KO2’s that I figured why go away from a tire I was happy with, so I think I am sticking with KO2’s unless someone makes a very compelling argument not to. I also looked at the Exo Grappler but was hard to find much info on them and while I use the van in the winter a lot, I don’t need studded tire level of grip. I would just slap on chains if I needed that level of traction I think.

I looked at Method wheels but they don’t seem to match the vintage of an Econoline SMB to me. Tundra/Tacoma/FourRunner, yeah Method all day long for sure. Just my .02. And Procomp looked like they only made the 7069 in a 17x9 with what sounds like too much backspacing(4.75”).

I sold my set of stock steel wheels (same size as yours) plus original plastic wheel covers on CL for $200. I was amazed.. and happy they sold.

Try some Falken Wildpeak tires as they are good off road and snowflake rated. Miss mine but will put some on this van in the spring. Now, I have KO2 but not sure I really care for them.

Same here, I sold the stock steel wheels (no covers) with used tires on Craigslist for $250 in less than a week to the first guy that called. Guess I could have gotten more but quick easy and out of the way.

I agree with this as well. K02 did not last for me at all. Just got Falken wild peak AT and love them so far. Very quiet and deeper tread. I'm sold after the motortrend Overland trip and talking to others. These are the top tire out right now.

I sold my steelies with basic OEM road tires for around $200 in just a few days. Lots of people running e-vans as work trucks who need new tires to pass inspection or whatever. $50 per corner mounted is very attractive. I’m sure I could have sold them for more.

The AR172 is a solid choice, and Pro Comp has the similar 69 Vintage. I put a set of GFX TR-16 on a project van, got them at Discount/America’s.
Falcon Wildpeak is a solid choice, as is the Toyo A/T 3.
I’ve been super happy and am sticking with the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac(E rated) on our own rig. I’m on my 3rd or is it 4th set, they’ve worn well, done well in a variety of conditions on/off road and have been the best performing A/T tire I’ve run in the snow, far superior to the BFG in that regard.
