Conversion Costs

To expand my options, I am considering buying a 2wd Sportsmobile and having it converted to 4x4. I've read quite a few posts over the past 1+ year, but most of you who have done conversions (Salem, Quigley, Quadvan) have not mentioned costs involved. I know it varies greatly depending on the specs (suspension, gearing, flares, tires/wheels, bumpers, etc). A local shop in Boulder, CO (Boulder Offroad) stated around $12K for basically just the 4x4. Can I get some ideas out there on costs (i.e. what you paid and the main items included)? Also, has anyone ever heard of Boulder Offroad or dealt with them? They supposedly specialize in van conversions.

Don't really know about the cost, but starting with an E 350 is a plus. Sorry I'm talkin Ford.

As a general rule, Quigley only does new vans. They did have a special going where they would do a limited number of used vans - to use up stock of axles that don't work with the 09's.

Around $12K is the starting price for most of the conversions. Extras add up quickly.

QuadVan will do use or new vans. They are also a ship through vendor for new vans so you can now buy and take delivery at any Ford dealer.

Salem-Kroger does used vans. In fact, Craig told me he prefers to do used vans. Ones where the final weight is known, where the springs have taken a set if they are going to. Makes it easier to setup the van with confidence that is where it will end up.

Unless you get the opportunity to see any of these conversions in person, it's hard to tell. None of the websites have any decent up close photos of the suspension, and everyone thinks they're the best. I think that 12K is a good average for a turn key 4wd conversion. -- But don't go on cost alone, sometimes the cheapest isn't the best, and I've seen many inferior 4wd conversions out there!!!

I was quoted $16200 yesterday for a conversion on a new SMB by a popular west coast converter. That included Mojovi wheels and 33" tire. Basic good system.

You may be able to do it yourself with a fabricator. I found all of my own parts from an F250 for $3000. Took it all to a local 4x4 fabricator. He did a great job converting me to 4 wheel. His cost was around $6000, but included installing a 46 gallon tank, rebuilding the transmission with the short shaft, changing the rear axle gears to match the front, adding an air locker, new drive shafts, etc.

I'm very pleased with my conversion. Relatively low cost and works well. The satisfaction of making it happen yourself and knowing the build is also a big plus.

My guy is willing to do another in Tucson. I can get you two together if you want.
