D-rings Frozen

Well, luckily I haven't had to use my Aluminess D-rings yet, but they've been hanging out in all kinds of weather and I was a little surprised when I went to remove them and they didn't unscrew.

Then I bent a 3/8" rod, inserting it through the eye of the screw bolt and hanging on it with a wrench (wasn't a very strong rod I guess)

Then I went for the big guns:

I hate to tear up the eyes, but it was this or leave them on. For the record I don't carry a pipe-wrench, cheater bar, scrap wood OR extra D-rings in the van, so it's a good thing I didn't find this offroad when I needed to open these.

The wood was used behind the D-ring to alter the position from against the bumper, such that the eye was at a good angle for the pipe wrench. Here they are off:

I currently keep all of my Jeep D-rings in the vehicle, but I didn't used to and this never happened (I've had them tight, but never rusted) of course, then again I was using them all the time....

As you can see, rust is the issue- I've had plenty of experience with rust and while a little PB Blaster probably would have helped, I didn't want to get it on everything:

So, I'm thinking head bolt anti-seize after I clean them up. Any other suggestions?

Re: D-rings Frozen

My first suggestion would be anti-sieze after you cleanup the rust.

How are you going to clean inside the D-ring threads?

Re: D-rings Frozen

Do you have a battery terminal cleaner?

I now use Loctite Anti-seize chapstick. It's rally nice to have around compared to a messy brush-in-a-can.

Re: D-rings Frozen

Maybe like a gun cleaning brush mounted in a drill to clean those inside threads.

Re: D-rings Frozen

I'm not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but the pins should not be tight when loaded. If they are, it can make the pins VERY hard to get out. General practice I believe is screw up snug, then back off either a quarter or half turn.
