Discount Tire will No longer Work on Vehicles with Spacers!

This means you, with you nice true track spacers on your 4x4 (I know some 2wds get them too).

Here's what happened:
The PO purchased a Discount Tire warranty and I blew a belt internally a few weeks ago.

I went to Discount today to see where the warranty stood and they hooked me up with a new tire ($193 value), 5 valve stems (all metal) and rotation and balance (free under warranty) and a new warranty for said new tire for around $60...

When they'd inspected all of my 4 old tires and remounted and balanced them with new stems, they mounted the new tire and put it on the spare.

They drove it to the front and handed me my keys and said, "We can't work on this vehicle ever again."

Basically it came down from "the top" that they can no longer service any vehicle with wheel spacers (SMBs, Mustangs, anything) because it's a liability issue. This is nationwide at all Discount Tires.

So I told him to take off the warranty- it's pointless to pay $30 if they're not going to be able to do anything for me.

He said, "We'll still work on your tires- you just have to bring them in loose". I said, "It's pretty much useless to me, I have a bad back and can't pull tires myself. Besides the free rotation becomes pointless."

Anyway there is a note on my vehicle now in their computer. So if you've got Discount Tire warranty the next time in will probably be your last, unless you're a fan of pulling your own tires.

Jeremiah,

You're sure this is nationwide? I've had some friends in AZ tell me that America's Tire (Discount Tire) won't install larger than factory tires on their vehicles, but I've had no problem with them in CA.

If this is true, everyone with tires and warranties from these guys should demand their money back, since they are in essence retroactively changing the terms and condictions of the warranty, making it useless to us. I know I don't want to leave my SMB up on jackstands while I run 4 or 5 80# tires and wheels to America's Tire and back, or maybe worse yet, make 4 or 5 separate runds to do one wheel/tire at a time.

Just called the America's Tire company store in Camarillo, CA.

They don't work on vehicles with wheel spacers.

Wheel spacers

Okay, I don't get it. Everyhting I've read says that spacers make vehicles safer, not more dangerous. So what's the liability issue?

It's different, therefore they'd rather not take any chances (or at least their lawyers won't take any chances).

You're right though, but in a country with more lawyers than doctors, this is what happens.

Wheel Spacers

Stuff like this drives me crazy. My Ford dealer (who is quite good so far with the SMB) has refused to install a Hella Tire Pressure System, since it is an after market item. As if a highly customized SMB isn't. Tire pressure monitoring systems make the dang vehicles safer!

Along the same line. Costco, Santa Cruz, CA. tells me, they will not mount anything other than the original stock tire and rim size (245's x16) on my 06 PSD, SMB 4X4. I can buy the desired 285-70-17s', but they will not mount them.

"Original" as equipped by Ford, or as delivered by SMB, a licensed RV manufacturer?
