Don't Use Mercon V in your Transfer Case (exploding T.C.)

Ford Now Says Don't Use Mercon V in your Transfer Case:

See the current back of Mercon V product:

"Not for use in transfer cases."

See whitetmw's thread about exploding transfer cases:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/13...ners-read.html

See the movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=F7gKtqkuhmU

Edit: Well, you can now forget about the movie. I don't know if he was fired or not, but the dealership tech's video is no longer accessible. So you will now have to read whitetmw's thread, above.

Re: Don't Use Mercon V in your Transfer Case (exploding T.C.

Ford now recommends Transfer Case Fluid XL-12

http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Ford-F.../dp/B001H1K6TQ

I have read that it is the same as Mercon which was what Ford recommended when our trucks were new.

I am using Mercon from Napa Auto Parts in both my transmission and in my transfer case. Mercon was also what Ford recommended when our trucks were new.

(As opposed to Mercon "V" which is apparently causing the transfer case problems.)

Re: Don't Use Mercon V in your Transfer Case (exploding T.C.

^good advice from E350.

Note: parts stores still carry regular Mercon, even though Ford does not (except relabeled as T-case fluid). I think it's actually smart on Ford's part to rebrand it, to keep it out of transmissions.

I do however highly recommend Mercon-V for the 4R100. It does not burn like Mercon does. It may get hot enough to foam up and puke out, but it will never develop the burned smell, and hence introduce abrasives into the system, like old Mercon does when it gets too hot. I think switching to Mercon-V is one big reason I have 400,000+ miles on my original 4R100.

Re: Don't Use Mercon V in your Transfer Case (exploding T.C.

carringb: Good enough for me. Mark K.'s advice is also to use Mercon V in the 4R100 transmission. (Although he is curiously silent on the Mercon V in the exploding transfer case threads.) So I will now use Mercon V in the transmission and Mercon or "Transfer Case Fluid XL-12" in the transfer case.

BTW, even if you have a 2WD Ford E Series van, you may want to swap out the shallow 2WD 4R100 transmission pan and shallow filter for the deep 4WD 4R100 transmission pan and deep filter from the 4WD F Series pickup trucks -- because the latter has a drain plug. And while I do not advocate a power "flush" which I have read can hurt your transmission, I do like being able to change my transmission fluid more often than Ford recommends and without having to drop the transmission pan.

Unless you are willing to drain your torque converter (which I have been afraid to do) it takes some driving and mixing of the new transmission fluid with the old to fully change out the old transmission fluid to new.

Re: Don't Use Mercon V in your Transfer Case (exploding T.C.

I just do the bucket method (pump 6 qts out through the cooler hose, fill and repeat). By the 3rd cycle it is very abruptly changes coolers, so it seems to effectively get the old stuff out without much mixing. Since switching to this method instead of dumping the pan (all over the myself, I might add), I've gone to 100,000 mile intervals. So far so good.
