I agree one shouldn't drive in 4wd on clean dry pavement even with open differentials. As the outside wheels go farther than the inside the also go farther than the back. Since the front and rear driveshafts rotate at the same rate you will bind up the driveshafts. This is e specially true if d riving curvy roads which tends to the case of mountain roads.
