Nice flow rate on the compressor, but it should given how big it looks. I wonder if there's a reason I can't find anyone giving the dimensions of that thing. I did find one site listing the weight at 48 lbs.

I did find one Australian compressor comparison (didn't give dimensions either) that said the compressor drew 120A. Got a BIG alternator?

Re: Extreme Air - In or Out?

So the decision has been made to purchase an ExtremeAir Magnum compressor and have it mounted outside under the van.

Does anyone have a picture of of an air compressor mounted on the driver's side rail under the van, that I can show to the shop in town that will do the install?

Many thanks for looking for a pic.

Re: Extreme Air - In or Out?

Thanks for the effort CJ! I'm still a week and half out from getting the compressor shipped here and installed. It's always helpful to show the installer where it is mounted rather than letting them invent it for themselves.

Re: Extreme Air - In or Out?

Here is one I have in my gallery although it is mounted on the passenger side frame rail.

The output from the compressor connects to a valve which allows me to direct the air flow to the air tank (left) or directly to the quick couplers (right). The tee on the right side of the valves directs flow toward both quick couplers mounted on the rear bumper and front bumper. McMaster-Carr has panel-mounted quick-couplers which simplify the installation of the quick couplers.

Re: Extreme Air - In or Out?

Why have a valve at all? Why not just pressurize the whole system?

Re: Extreme Air - In or Out?

I posted a message to the Yahoo list in 2006 about the standard SMB setup with the tank and Fred Whorff of SMB (I believe he is responsible for the design of the SMB 4x4) posted the following back in response:

"On my electric air systems, I put a valve between the tank and compressor. My quick couplers are fed from between the compressor and tank valve (I have a ½” pipe manifold). This way my tire fill time is less as I don’t have to fill both the tire and tank. I can open the connection to my tank for use with tools that require short quick high volume charges of air, like an impact wrench, die grinder, drill, etc. Having a 2-3 cubic foot tank charged only helps to quicken the inflation rate of 1 tire. After that you are filling tire and tank volume."

Re: Extreme Air - In or Out?

Thanks Jack! The pic helps a lot. I had not considered running lines to the front and rear to ease inflating the tires. Skywagon had a long, coiled air hose on his Extreme Air in Bill Burke's 4WD SMB class last year, but I think he had to pass it under the vehicle to reach the passenger side tires.

Re: Extreme Air - In or Out?

Ed, got some pictures, now all I have to do is resize and post.......sounds easy enough BUT! Not for me, I'm a bit photo challenged when it comes to resizing and posting....

Anyway, I would stress that you run lines and get a fitting front and rear. It's on my long list to get lines run to the front and rear and to reposition the fittings so they are not under the Van. Not to sure about others but I have had some trouble with dirt/mud/etc clogging the one fitting I have under the van

Others have put them in the aluminess bumpers. My plan too.

Pictures to follow, my extreme air is mounted side to side right in front of the fuel tank next to the trans case. The 5 gal air tank is on the pass side and runs frnt to rear.

Pictures soon......
