Re: Help identifying 4WD conversion

Chris: I have no idea what rotors I have but my hole pattern is 8 on 6.5". Rotors are 13" dia x 1.5" thick

Looking at JWA's thread about doing a brake upgrade to older 2WD Econolines, it appears that my rotors are neither pre-08 Ford van or post 08 Ford van for a number of reasons. I could be mistaken, but it looks like the 2WD rotors have the lugs in them and tone rings; mine have holes for the lugs and the tone ring is one the spindle. (hope I have the nomenclature correct)

Pre-08 ford van appear to be 13" x 1.25 thick and post 08 appear to be 13.5" x 1.5 thick.

Re: Help identifying 4WD conversion

2wd (Stock E-Series) rotors have the hub built into them and are completely different an not what you have.

Thanks Ramsey, I figured that out this morning by looking at a few pictures. So did Dana produce Ford high pinion kingpin Dana 60's that came with 8 x 6.5" disc brakes at any time?.....Or if not, is it possible that my axle has Chevy spindles since it's 8 x 6.5"?

.......I'm trying to determine what rotors are on my van. I communicated with another member here several months ago; he had a very similar van with an Advanced 4X4 conversion and had just done his brakes. He mentioned that the pads/calipers were late model Chevy parts.......I'm trying to determine if my van is similar without removing the rotors and calipers and driving over to NAPA or Orange Engine.

....and I'm also curious about fitting larger rotors......which now does not appear do-able unless someone makes some 13.5" rotors that would fit a kingpin Dana 60 and I would need to design & fab new caliper stands.

Re: Help identifying 4WD conversion

These kingpin axles in vans are a common source of confusion. Dana/Spicer sells complete D60's new that several companies have used over the years. This is what you appear to have (besides the caliper stand mods) These D60's from D/S have GM outers and but a D side drop like a Ford (lots of Quigley's like this)

Ford has never allowed D/S to sell their axle parts even though D/S made them. Ford only....

Hope that made sense!

Re: Help identifying 4WD conversion

Yes, it pretty much makes sense......what exactly is the "outer" in "GM outers" spindle? Outer axle shaft beyond the u-joint?

Outers would be knuckles, spindles, hubs, stub shafts, calipers & rotors, locking hubs.
