Identifying rear axle - 02 Quigley 4x4 V10
I need to change my rear diff fluid, but want to make sure I use the right gear oil/additives.
How can I positively identify the axle? (Ford vs Dana xx vs Dana yy)
Mine does have a fill bolt and cover that looks like a Dana.

75w140 is a good bet for any heavy vans.

Thanks, I'd like to at least know what the right factory oil is, and also know what diff it is so I can maybe look at a Mag-Hytec cover etc.
I'll post some pictures tonight.

If you have a limited slip diff, don't forget the friction additive.

Brings up a question, what does the additive do to an open diff? I mean if you're not sure is there harm in adding it anyway?

No harm at all. It could cause issues in a manual transmission with synchros, but not in a diff.
(this is why Redline makes 75W90NS for manual transmissions, no friction modifiers)
I did mention "additives" in the first post. Quigley suggested to get rid of my LSD shudder that I drain, clean out with Brakeleen, and refill.
Here is the picture of the diff:

Looks like a Dana 60 style cover.
And it looks like the tag is there, between the two right hand bolts. That tag should ID the axle.

Here's a thread that I started on rear axle ID. Might help.

Re: Identifying rear axle - 02 Quigley 4x4 V10
Super helpful thread!, thanks! I guess I searched on "identify" and not ID
So looks like it is a Dana 60 semi-float 3.73 trac-lock.
Maybe I shouldn't have put wheel spacers on....
I may put a Mag-Hytec cover on while I'm at it - or not, I don't see a Mag Hytec cover for Dana 60 rear...

I called a guy who runs a driveshaft/diff shop.... He said for an older design like the Dana 60 to stick with a name brand 80w90 and 2 bottles of the Ford Motorsport limited slip additive. He also said to take the over off, clean out the bottom and also the magnetic fill plug if fitted. I emphasized the vehicle weight and he said that is what they are designed for and to stick with 80w90 unless you are doing serious offroading.
In other news Mag Hytec said to use their Dana 70 cover as bolt pattern is same as Dana 60 rear.
