Increasing your Tire size and ABS?

Hi there,

Planning to upgrade my stock 225/75/16 to 285/75/16 and according to the all knowing internet this is not recommended as it interferes with the ABS. Counting you guys all run big badass tiires/wheel combo's, did your get the ABS recalibrated?

I was aware of the impact on speedometer and can adjust by driving withe the GPS, but the impact on the brakes seems a bit scary..

If you change all the tires, it shouldn't have an affect on the ABS. If you only change one end, expect problems.

You should have the ECU reprogrammed though because that can affect transmission shift logic.

Ford vans still have both tire size and diff ratios programmable whereas most modern vehicles have a tone ring on the diff carrier that does away with the need to calibrate the diff ratio. However, the ratio and tire size choices on the van are limited so if you want an accurate speedometer you need to settle on a combination where the final gearing (ratio and tire size) is close to stock. For instance: a 285/75 16 with 4.10 gears is very close to 245/75 16 with 3.73 gears which is a stock combination. But your converter should be walking you through all of this.

I have a stock 2008 12 Passenger 5.4 V8 and its being converted next month. I was considering waiting to change my tires/wheels till next year as the dealer had just put 4 new nice all weather tires on and it seems to be a waste to just trash them.

And yes I had talked to Advance 4x4 who said that the 285/75/16 is not an issue and a standard size for many of the vans they convert. I'm just a complete novice when it comes to car and it never hurts to get another opinion, especially as I may wait tlll spring to get the wheels/tires replaced at Canadian Tire and they aren't the biggest Van conversion experts

If you shop around, tire and wheel prices are way better south of the border. Any rubber you waste by pulling them off early, will be negated by the lower US prices. You could also bring your old tires and wheels home and Craigslist them. I might even be interested.

I find my abs disappear as my spare tire size increases. We are talking dunlap's disease here aren't we? My spare tire done laps over my belt...
