Lube level in front diff?

When I take the plug out of the front differential, should there be enough gear lube in it to just ooze out the hole? As it is, it's about 1/2 inch below the hole.

And what's the best way to top it off it it's low. This is the first time in 70k miles, and a couple lube changes it's been below the level of the hole.

thanks....

It won't change the volume unless there is a leak or it is coming out the vent. In either case there would be a mess somewhere.

Re: Lube level in front diff?

Any suggestions on the best way to top it off? The Van isn't due for service for several months.

thanks...

Re: Lube level in front diff?

1/2" below the hole is nothing to be concerned with and probably where it needs to be. The diff is a closed system so unless you have a leak there's no reason to top off.

I filled my rear to be level with the hole and it squirted stanky grease out the vent pipe for a few weeks, really nasty mess.

If you don't agree it won't do any harm. Funnel and tube would do the job or just squirt in from a bottle.

Re: Lube level in front diff?

Thanks for the tips, no need for skanky messes, I'll leave it just like it is.

Re: Lube level in front diff?

When having my unit bearings swapped out for dynatrac's free spin hub kit, Derek found there was diff fluid in the axle tube, my inner seals needed replacing, something to consider. I think we also found water in the tubes that got in there after forging all the flood waters we had here last fall=outer seals.
