Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

how are the passes into saline valley?
South Pass had big flooding in Lees Canyon in Sept/Oct(?) which had been fixed.
The breakover was muddy with some snow in the shade. Grapevine Canyon was in good shape, the rest was washboard. There had been a large rockfall near the marsh.

No one came in North Pass for the 9 days we were there, but looking across as we left it appeared you could do it with 4 chains and a knowledge of the road. No snow for sure below Whippoorwill Canyon.

The road into Eureka Valley had flooding and debris problems, Steele Pass was wet thru the narrows in Dedeckera canyon. Hanging Rock Canyon on the east side of Eureka Valley was OK.

No info on the Lippencott road (my wife will not even let anything like the thought of doing it in the SMB be spoken).

It was very quiet at the springs, not many campers while we were there.
People were flooding in thru South Pass as we left. (Tuesday)

There was a nice sized "Lake Saline"

Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

Thanks for the road info!

Wow, 9 days at the springs is living.

We will probably do 1 or 2 nights there and then boondock somewhere in DV.

We will come in via south pass, and hopefully exit north pass. The kids will be with us so if we have any doubts about north pass, we will go out the south. Calling home to report a "stuck in the SMB with the kids" situation is something I try very hard to avoid.

Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

Ford hubs = Warn hubs.

Warn is the manufacture of the Ford OEM hubs. I won't say you didn't get/had the incorrect hubs, but it's not because they are Warn vs Ford, just the wrong application.

Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

For failsafe hubs they have to be for the right front end. If someone (previous owner) put the wrong Warn hubs on all the first shop found was that they were not working properly. They like most did not know the Quigley/Superduty front end and just replaced what they thought was a bad hub. Warn (and everybody else) only makes 2 hubs for a Dana 60, pre-99 and 99-later and the clip is the different item. I have hubs (Selctro) for the early front on my SD axle but these hubs work and attach differently.

The only hubs that fail to the locked position are DynaTrac hubs. http://www.dynatrac.com/products_dynaloc_page.html

Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

I think this is what Bones was saying but is this possible:

1. Original Quigley Hubs broken somehow
2. 4x4 Shop throw wrong hubs/parts at it (bolts on, it must work right?)
3. Ford dealer identifies and corrects

Does Quigley get their axles whole, end to end, for/from Superduty or do they get the housing and build them?

No.

Quigley used Warn Hubs 11690 for original build.

First SMB owner never uses 4wd.

Warn Hubs 11690 work intermittently for me (second owner @ 30k miles) until I determine they are not working for sure all the time.

My local 4WD store replaces Warn Hubs 11690 with Warn Hubs 11690 when I complain of no 4wd but does not diagnose if hubs are actually broken.

Replaced Warn Hubs 11690 DO work for me last month on the beach in Baja.

Replaced Warn Hubs 11690 DO NOT work in snow on North Pass this month.

Ford dealer in Bishop replaces Warn Hubs 11690 with Ford SuperDuty hubs which work in Saline and on I-40.

Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

While I can't tell you about your specific hub problem, you did buy used.

Sometimes used vehicles are headaches, even borderline lemons (not saying yours is).
You may have to fix a couple of things on a used vehicle to 'get it right'.

I have been told hubs need to be used (engaged/dis-engaged) to lubricate themselves. True?
I have had hubs go bad on a vehicle I did not use 4x4 for a long time.
Maybe yours were not locked in or out properly at sometime, or driven on dry pavement for too long.

Hubs go bad sometimes!

Besides maybe the wrong hubs going in initially (maybe hold that shop responsible?), you should be through that problem. Sorry it was your wallet.
Now you have the knowledge for next time, or somebody else's mis-fortune.
Document correct needed parts for your rig!

As QuadVan told me, even though they mimic and use all factory parts, its still a custom installation.
Not factory!

I don't see it as a Quigly problem. Mechanical things fail.
And the work going into your vehicle is only as good as the people doing it.

Good luck and happy trails!

Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

Hubs are supposed to be cleaned and re-greased periodically (I do mine once a year) and old grease (or to much) will cause them to stick. I use synthetic grease and oils so that they don't thicken up in the cold.

Hubs are overlooked most of the time as far as maintance goes.

Re: More Quigly 4X4 problems

I'm interested in hearing Quigley's response about the differences between these hubs. What do they think about this swap?

Please post a followup if you ask them about this.
