Need to know about quigley wobble
I am looking at purchasing a Smb. Want 4x4, but I am hearing that the quigley set up has poor turning radius, and a death wobble. If I puchase a quigley 4x4 rig, is there anything that can be done to get rid these problems?
Thanks

Re: Need to know about quigley wobble
There are some posts here as to actual turning radius, but of the 4x4 conversions, SMB has the best turning radius, and the other conversions are a few feet bigger. Whether that difference is worth the difference in cost or not, is only a decision you can make, depending upon your intended uses of the van.
As to death wobble, as far as I know, any vehicle can develop death wobble. Is the Quigley more prone to death wobble? I doubt it. Death wobble is typically a combination of front end problems (worn bushings, cracked track bar mounts,...).

Re: Need to know about quigley wobble
I agree with Herb, I've never heard that specific complaint about Quigley. Quigley has been doing vans for years (more than 25 years I think) so there are a lot more older systems out there for them to possibly develop this problem due to maintenance vs. design, or for an older design, etc.
Exactly where are you hearing the death wobble comment from?
And while SMB's 4x4 turn radius is tighter than Quigley, I think they are both better than stock. I know there are threads about the turn radii around here somewhere.

Re: Need to know about quigley wobble
I read about the wobble in several different forums. Should I have any hesitation in purchasing a quigley 4x4 over another (besides Tradius). Is there better desings(years) of quigley over another?

Re: Need to know about quigley wobble
I wouldn't let this issue affect a decision on Quigley vs. any other 4x4 van. The new Quigleys are not the same as older ones.
Nearly any solid axle 4x4 can experience 'Death Wobble'. Leaf spring axles are less prone, but it can happen. As long as all the parts are in good shape and properly tightened, 'Death Wobble' does not exist.

I heard it might have something to do with bad tie rods and an older worn out or needs adjusting steering stabilizer... or even a perceived death wobble due to bad or old warped brake rotors.
I have an older Quigley and do live with the poor turning radius. You just have to live with it and be aware it doesn't turn like a Honda Odyessy.
As far as the death wooble, never appeared on me yet.
Granted I put in beefier springs in the front, new front brake rotors and newer leaf springs in the back with Bilsteins shocks all around with a new rancho steering stabilizer.
My Sporto steers and rides like a Caddy..

Re: Need to know about quigley wobble
It has been an issue for several years. Some rigs are affected more than others. Sometimes it's a worn out trac bar bushing or sleeve, even a steering component. I've even seen cracked trac bar mounts cause it.

Re: Need to know about quigley wobble
FYI, I had a 98 2-wheel drive E350 before this Quigley 4x4. This 07 E350 4x4 has a tighter turning radius than the 2wd.

Re: Need to know about quigley wobble
Death wobble mostly occurs on vehicles with coil spring front ends. Certain year Dodge pickups are notorious for it. As others have stated, it is usually corrected by replacing or repairing parts. The track bar is the most common culprit. I wouldn't be afraid of an older Quigley because of death wobble, it can be cured by the proper application of money (as with most problems).... Quigley seems to be aware of the issue as our 2007 E350 came with dual steering stabilizers from the factory.
2005 and later Quigleys use the factory F350 front axle and have a better turning radius than earlier models. My turning radius is a bit under 49 feet with 35" tires. I can hang u-turns in most places w/o fear of the dreaded multi-point turn in southern California traffic.
