New SMB - Insurance Recommendations

Hi guys,

I'm a new SMB 4x4 owner, and new to this forum. Does anyone have any tips on the best company to use for insuring the SMB? The interior is not set up as an RV, if that matters.

Many thanks in advance!

pd

Re: New SMB - Insurance Recommendations

I used AAA for several years without any problems whatsoever and they had one of the best prices around. That being said, I also didn't have any claims. I would've stuck with them if they could insure our home, but they can't so we switched to State Farm and the pricing was comparable. A huge bonus of AAA for us was when we broke down on a mountain pass on the way to Tahoe. Our membership gave us a free 50+ mile tow and a subsequent tow to a service facility the next day. We are keeping our AAA membership.

Re: New SMB - Insurance Recommendations

Hi sdwindandsea,

Thanks for the info on AAA. I currently have 21st Century, mainly because my motorcycle and truck are with them too. One point that is not so clear regards the 4x4 build components and how they are insured (ie., if the van gets stolen), as opposed to replacing a stock Econoline F350 van. I don't think the 4x4 conversion is called out on the policy, although I was very clear when insuring with 21st that it was an SMB 4x4 conversion.

Off topic: Many years ago, I lived on Girard, just up the street from the Pannikin Cafe.

I have progressive and it was easy to list everything for them. They have dealt with SMB's before. You can fill it all out online and get a quote to see how much free of charge and no obligation to compare. I have never had a claim with them yet so can't speak to that end.

Insured for purchase value.

Re: New SMB - Insurance Recommendations

I was concerned about that as well. AAA insured the van for the purchase value and it was stated as such (the $ amount) on the policy.

Re: New SMB - Insurance Recommendations

Ok great. I guess I should check the policy fine print, to see the $ amount insured. Thanks for the info guys!

Re: New SMB - Insurance Recommendations

GMAC has been fantastic to work with on my little rip off and trashing of my van. But wow I pay a lot. I got me a little ticket by a CHP with an attitude a while back and Ca. threw some big points at me...hurts with a class A DL. Policy jumped 400 bucks more a year I've got full replacement value which runs out this year and the policy should drop...I hope.

Re: New SMB - Insurance Recommendations

Thanks everyone for the information posted here. I've learned a lot.

I have been told by one insurance agent that our SMB will be considered a 2011 model for insurance purposes since we will take completed delivery in early December 2010, even though it's being built on a 2009 Sprinter chassis.

Anybody out there who can confirm or deny that?
