Re: Output Shaft on E350 transmission good for 4x4?

My wheelbase is almost 2" longer due to a rear spring upgrade. And it sits about 3" higher than stock. The stock drive shaft is fine. I was worried at first, but so far so good.

Re: Output Shaft on E350 transmission good for 4x4?

My 2001 7.3 van has the 4r100. I opted for a shaft change and transmission rebuild at the same time. The adapter for a ford transfer case is an easy find. Atlas I don't know. Keep in mind the speedo sensor is in the stock tailcone so an adapter will be required.

Re: Output Shaft on E350 transmission good for 4x4?

I would also try to use the standard ford adapter to the transfer case. the quigley adapter is 13 in long pushes the transfer case back rather far. also the 4r100 tranny has a electronic speed sensor in the tail housing make sure you use the correct shaft and 4x4 tail housing with the speed sensor hole in it. Hope this helps Dave

Dave, where can I get the ford adapter?

Also, when you say that i need t make sure to use the correct shaft and tail housing, is this only if I don;t use the adapter? I am a little confused, sorry

Thanks for all the info

Re: Output Shaft on E350 transmission good for 4x4?

He's just saying to make sure the new adaptor has the proper attachment for the speedo cable/etc. At this point, your best bet is to start shopping the local tranny shops & tell them what you plan to do. They can provide the parts and do the swap. Try to find a shop that is actually a little enthusiastic about it, some can be a real pain if they feel they're "doing you a favor" ---Chris

Re: Output Shaft on E350 transmission good for 4x4?

I just bought and received a used 4x4 extension housing for my 4R75W from Whatever it Takes Transmission (found it online). Only $33 plus reasonable shipping and it looks like it's in great shape. They have a few more too.
I'm not sure what tranny you have but here is the link to the extension housing, hope it helps and keeps your costs down on the build:

U76770BA Extension Housing, AOD/AODE 4X4 (6 3/8" Long)(Aluminum) (With 1 Threaded Boss For Shifter) $33.03

Also, found the 4x4 output shaft on eBay for $55 and it looks almost new.

Re: Output Shaft on E350 transmission good for 4x4?

I have a Quigley (2001 E250) that I just changed to a Ujoint Offroad kit. I liked the Quigley adapter as my Front driveshaft could be longer. I would try to find a F350 Trans and just swap the whole thing in transfer case and all. I have found a few Quigley vans in Salvage yards in the Lower 48and could relay them to you but untill you know what year Van you end up with...
