Powder Coating Leaf Springs?

My very expensive Deaver springs look roughly one million years old after only four years. Would it hurt to have them powder coated? Would the heat affect the spring rate? They are also noisy, so I was thinking I could oil them after coating.

Re: Powder Coating Leaf Springs?

I suspect powder coating will just flake and fall off or trap rust underneath.

Maybe you can add teflon pads to your springs like the OEM Ford springs have?

They have pads, but several have worked their way out. Maybe some POR would be the way to go. I'm concerned the rust will weaken the springs leading to a failure.

Rattlecan some flat black Rustoleum. Repeat as needed.

Powdercoat won't affect the spring rate..

You can buy full length Teflon leaf spring liners that replace the little pads... I have them in my Cherokee and they are very nice... They make the leaf springs move so smoothly and quietly. They're a better option than oiling the leafs or using the small pads if you keep losing them.

Do not know about leaf springs, would guess (WAG) that they would be lower stressed then coil springs. Ran a test number of years ago on coil springs with a good coating and the spring sag that occurs with age (years) was greatly reduced because of the coating.

Please educate an ignoramus (me) on how (where) one would go about procuring and having such beasties installed. My springs at less than a year old already make this thing sound like a garbage truck wallowing down the road.

Re: Powder Coating Leaf Springs?

You can read more about the process of refurbishing a leaf spring pack here:
http://www.bsfab.net/?p=65

I bought mine through Eaton Detroit spring but I don't see it listed on their website anymore. It's worth calling them to see if they have a line on it still.

The other place I've dealt with in the past for this sort of stuff is Speedway Motors...
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Leaf-Spri ... ,2079.html

But I don't see 3" listed on their site either. Chances are that they could get some for you though.

I did this to my Jeep and it uses narrower leafs so it wasn't an issue for me to find 2.5" liner but these 3" springs on the van are proving a little harder to track down the right liner size.

On my Jeep it is a totally night and day difference with them in. The leaf springs react so smoothly and progressively... And quietly. I installed them about 5 years ago now and I have well over 200000km on them and the liners are still in great shape. I doubt they will ever wear out. They'll outlast the steel most likely.
