Question about E40D & BW1356

I have a 4x4 front end out of 91 Ford van. I have it for sale in the classified section at the moment. I bought it to convert a camper van that I own, but have since decided I didn't want to put that much work into that van, so I put it up for sale.

I'm not really on the up & up with Ford drive lines, but I was curious if anyone could tell me how long these were still being used in 4x4 converted in vans? A bit of googling I found that Ford used the E40D up until 1998.

I'm looking to get a newer van in the 06-09 range and was curious if using the E40D & the 1356 transfer case for a 4x4 conversion would be bad choice?

Re: Question about E40D & BW1356

Yes it would. The newer vans will have newer transmissions, either the 4R75, 4R100 or 5R110. You don't want to deal with swapping them to an older combo. Computers, etc. Not worth it.

And there are better options than the 1356. For a rig this size, you'l want a NV271 or an Atlas.

Isn't the NV271 a dodge transfer case?

Maybe. But it is also the transfer case which replaced the BW1356 in the larger vehicles such as the 1999 F250's and up.

Re: Question about E40D & BW1356

They've been in Fords since 99 and yes, Dodge uses them too.

Re: Question about E40D & BW1356

I have a 00 E350 and its has the BW1356.

and from my readings and being told. they are not the best choice if you are going to do some good off roading. they can be weak.

I would prefer a different one, but not planning on doing anything about it cause I just had mine rebuild cause I didn't have a choice at this time.

and will work just fine for now.

They are not weak - used in F350 (1 Ton) trucks, even CrewCabs, with 7.3'd no less.
