Quigley Experts: Transmission swap E4OD

Hey guys,

the question is quite a simple one:
My rig is an E350 Quigley 1992, 7.3 IDI N/A with an E4OD and a Borg Warner 1356.
Can I swap an E4OD from a Diesel donor F250/350 (2WD and/or 4WD) or E350 into an E350 Quigley? Without a hassle?

I know that the tailhouse is different (as it fits to the Borg Warner) from an 2 WD E4OD to the one I have but probably the same as from an F250? I don´t know and as here are no vehicles to compare (in Germany ;-) ) I cannot do so.
The extension housing is named QTTX-891- so it seems to be a Quigley part.
What about the shifter position, any difference?

Has Quigley done anything special on their trannys to fit?
I hope- but don´t know- that they just adapted the F Series 4 WD parts into the Econolines and therefore made some Parts to make the system fit.

My solution could be to get a tranny from a F250 Diesel and swap it in. But in this case it do need to fit. I cannot get any tranny specialists to change any internal parts of the E4OD, as here are no tranny specialists for 20 year old US Car parts.
If there are only bold on parts to swap to a donor E4OD- that will be ok.

Will there be any electronic issues coming? There is an EEC Relay anywhere located, near the left side in the engine department. Does this control the tranny?
I have a 100 pages ATSG Technical Service Information pager here- but as I am not an expert I don´t understand everything and it cover 2WD only, as far as I´ve seen.


PS: Of course I contacted Quigley already (2 different personalized Em-Mail addresses + once over their Website Contact form) and I get no response!

I hope this helps. in my case i have a 2000 E250 with a gas 5.4 engine and a e4OD. Quigley uses a stock 2 wheel drive e4OD. They remove the 2 wheel drive tail housing and replace it with the Quigley adapter ( QTTX-891) and a spine adapter that mates the transmission shaft to the transfer case. They do this so they do not need to tear down the transmission to replace the two wheel drive tail shaft. So my Guess is all you need is to find a 2 wheel drive e4Od transmission and swap it out..Not sure but it probable needs to be from a diesel truck, I think the gear ratio may be different between gas and diesel trucks.

No need to get an overpriced, used transmission of unknown mileage and condition if yours is not completely grenaded.

Actually I cannot throw 2 or 3 grand into a rebuild tranny. At least not at this stage where this rig sits right now. I still believe in minor issues on that thing ...

Thanks for your offer - but language is not an issue for me
The changes in the tail-house you explained sound logical for me. So a swap could be a backup solution for me, if the minor problems will end up worse.

Hi,

probably 2 different ones:
First there was no shifting into OD and OD light coming on 2/minutes after start.

30 miles later truck was in a shop due to other things. At first start the alternator blowed. With that (probably) the brand new batteries (8V and 11V). After that the engine was jump started and I got only reverse and first/maybe second gear. No shifting, manual or on 2nd/D. Not sure if it was 2nd or first at a short test ride, as gearing is relative low at 4.10.

Only 2nd could mean that the tranny gets no signal from the ECC (or whatever, the module that controls the E4OD). As this was tested with dead (more or less) batteries, it could be just a fuse or something like this. E4OD/4R100 are going into a fail-safe program. With a light OD signal, btw.

Second problem shouldn´t be a bigger problem. But this doesn´d solve the no OD issue.

The relation to electronics is possible. But, as said, the OD light came on before the blown alternator. So it is probably 2 issues.

I can probably organize an used tranny from a donar. Therefore I need to know if this would work or not.

Of course I would check if electronics works on my E4OD before purchasing and swapping a new one. But this doesn´t solve the OD problem.

Btw IF my mechanic/garage works 10h on this rig 1000 is gone. And he was´nt very confident when we told me that after the alternator change my tranny did not work anymore... He doesn´t want to work on it.

Anyhow- every hint is welcome.
