removing transfer case shift boot

I've got a 1995 (single stick) Quigley setup in my van. The transfer case shifter knob doesn't want to sping off, but I haven't forced it. Before I booger it up or break something, can someone tell me how to remove it? It's got to be spin off, like most, or pry the top printed cover off and a bolt is below, but before I take a strong arm or a screwdriver to it, can someone tell me how to do it properly?

Thanks

Re: removing transfer case shift boot

My '95 has the top cover. I have had it off because I was trying to twist the whole knob to get the print lined up, and somehow figured out the top cover would move. I twisted that knob all I could by hand, and was about to bust out a pipe wrench when I found the cover would move.

Having said all that, I don't know if there is bolt under it... didn't even look once I got the print oriented correctly.

Here's what's underneath the cap on an older Quigley shifter. No bolt or obvious sign of how you would remove it. I keep forgetting to call Quigley before they close. It will NOT spin off like most shifter knobs. Any ideas anyone?

Re: removing transfer case shift boot

I finally figured it out once I started rolling around under the van a little. There is NO WAY that shifter knob comes off from the top. Pretty easy to just unbolt it at the linkage underneath and slide the whole post up through the boot and off. You will have to widen the clamp with a pry bar/screwdriver but it's pretty simple.

I'm not too crazy about how SMB cut a huge hole in the body for this shifter and basically only insulated it with carpet, but I'm sure things have improved since 95.

Re: removing transfer case shift boot

Quigley, not SMB, did that when they did the 4x4 conversion.

Not that SMB would do any better.
