Last week I talked to one of the techs at Sportsmobile about Ford vans. My question was do they re-gear the rear ends if you go from OEM tire sizes to 34" or 35". He said that they are not able to do new vans with tires larger than 32" (maybe a fraction smaller or taller, can't remember). Therefore, they feel they don't need to re gear the rear end because it is close to original. I was surprised and asked why. Apparently the new Fords have some roll over sensors and other new sensors and they are not permitted to go over a certain tire size. (this may have been covered before and I missed it).

I would think all bets are off with Ford once the van is converted to 4x4. I may be wrong but I think they're still putting 35" wheels on 17 or 18" rims if clients want them while 33" is the norm.

So the question is.....can the Ford mechanic get into the computer and tell it that I have 285/70-R17s on it now. It's not that I'm concerned about my MPH, that's a 6% change from what I was on, but the miles driven will be off and if there are warranty issues, there may be problems as to when that actually occurred. I've been told that they can only program up to a 265.
I don't know what the options are for axle ratios and tire size, but running a larger tire will under report the miles driven and 'extend' your warranty.

Well, that brings up an interesting philosophical question...as far as the van is concerned, from the axles inboard, it has traveled less miles than actual and those less miles are what's shown on the odo....everything has certainly spun less revolutions than it would have with smaller tires.
That year (2012 Ford E-150) have the digital settings and needs to be done at a Ford dealer through their computers. Do not know how many settings there are, you will have to ask the Ford service guys.
I'm hoping to have that fixed during a future visit.
Took Sherman (2013 E350) to the Ford dealer and they maxed out their setting. The OD is still 1-2 mph off, but closer. Tech said he only had so much room in the settings. Quadvan 4x4, tires 285/70 R17
