Swap Quigley parts to new van?

I have a 98 E250 EB SMB, 2WD. I've never really thought much about a 4x4 van, mainly due to the expense and the fact that here on the East Coast there aren't really as many cool places to get to that need 4WD.

However, I just saw a 94 Ford van for sale locally that has a Quigley setup. It's priced really cheaply at $1500, and it got me thinking about buying it and swapping over the parts. I know there are better 4x4 setups, but I figure after pulling the suspension parts and then scrapping the rest of the van (which is tired) I wouldn't be into things too deep $$-wise.

Without getting into too many details, any thoughts on how hard it would be to basically just swap over parts from the 94 to my 98?

Thanks!

Re: Swap Quigley parts to new van?

It might depend on what engine/transmission and final drive ratio each van has. If everything matches up, you should be able to do it.

Frame mounts are the same, and I think your ABS sensors are at least compatible (i.e. you may have to keep your existing sensor but they should bolt in), so it should work.

One thing to keep in mind is the 4-speed transmissions do require disassembly to swap tail-shafts. Transmission controls were updated in '97 so I don't think you can just swap the entire transmission over even though its the same E4OD for both vans (assuming the donor van is also an E350).

...as Mike already mentioned, the front and rear diffs need to be the same ratios.

The axle code which decodes into the diff ratio is on the data label on the drivers door jamb.

If they are different, perhaps you could also transplant the donor rear axle as well.

It is a lot more work than you would think, but something you can do. Just plan on the van being out of service for several weeks while you tackle the project.

Re: Swap Quigley parts to new van?

Hello everyone,
I was hoping to revive this thread and get some advice. I have wanted a sportsmibile for quite some time but nothing in my price range was ever for sale locally. One day when I was searching craigslist I came across a 1997 chinook. I was able to pick it up for $6500 and I am very happy with the purchase. There's just one problem. I live very close to beaches that allow oceanfront camping but I can't get out there with a 2wd camper. I am dreaming of a 4x4 conversion and would appreciate some advice or recommendations from this forum regarding a potential donor 4x4. I tried to contact quigley but they were no help.

My RV: 1997 chinook on a ford e350, v10 triton motor, dual rear wheels

Donor RV: 2008 on a ford e450, dual rear wheels, no motor, quigley 4x4

Does anyone know if the 4x4 parts from the much newer 2008 will fit on my 1997. The donor Rv had a fire but the 4x4 and all tires were not damaged. I am hoping to get the donor for $3000 if it is compatible. Thanks in advance for your help, Chris

Re: Swap Quigley parts to new van?

Does the donor RV have the transmission/transfer case, or did that go with the motor?

Yes. The donor has both transmission and transfer case.
