Toyo Tire Upgrade-4:10 gears OK?

So after being at yesterdays meet&greet in SoCal and seeing all the nice rigs, I have decided to go with larger tires.

Before I do so, I would like some advice.

Here is what I have:
  • 1. Currently running BFG AT 285-75-16.
    2. I have 4.10 gears.
    3. Standard brakes I suppose
    4. I have the V10 with the SMB 4x4 package
    5. A lot of road driving and offroad trips on fire roads, rocks, dirt

I am strongly considering Toyo M/T 315-75-16 E Rated.

Several of you have convinced me that the Toyo's are better than the BFG's (though I have always liked my BFG M/Ts on my Jeeps).

So what I would like to know is the following:
  • 1. How do they handle on the road? A couple of you said they pull at freeway speeds?
    2. How are they as far as noise? (especially compared to BFG A/Ts)
    3. What do you think of running this size with 4.10 gears especially on the low end?
    4. Since I have the 16" rims, I assume I have the standard brakes. Anyone running this size tire without upgrading their brakes? If so any noticable difference?
    5. Any negatives with this tire?

Thanks very much.

steve

Steve

I will probably go with larger tires in the future. I was thinking 17 in rims for more stability for the weight of the van.

Steve,

I switched out my 285/75/16 Cooper Discover S/T that SMB had installed for PO

I decided to go with the Toyo MT 35/12.5/17 and switch out the wheels for a future brake upgrade if needed

It does not have as much rubber as the 315/75/16 because of the larger wheels but the ride still improved with the larger tires

I was expecting a much noisier highway ride from the MT's but was pleasantly surprised -- nothing like the BFG MT's that I had on a F250

I also have 4:10's with the 6.0 and pulled a 9000lb trailer this summer 1200 miles and never felt under powered -- 50mph up the grapevine
It runs 2000 RPM @ 65mph -- I was considering a gear change but am happy with this combo after this trip

I did not do the brake upgrade and never have felt I really needed it. -- My transformer is not as heavy as most of the RB50's out there though-- I would guess I weigh around 9000lbs.

All in all I am very happy with this tire -- IMHO You get the look of a MT with the ride of an AT

Dave,

I didn't have a scan gauge when I had the 285's but I now average 12-13 city, 15-16 hwy - I would assume it is better at the speeds I drive -- If 2000RPM is the sweet spot that now puts me at 65MPH -- I usually drive 70MPH Hwy

I'm running Toyo MT 285/75 16's on my V10 and it previously had the BFG AT's - didnt really notice a drop or change in mpg or noise

I remember while we were out in Death Valley that Jaysens 35 Toyo would rub at least up front.

Steve,

My 35's rub but only when fully cranked to the right on bumps -- It hits on the rear on the wheel well on the bushwacker plastic -- never any damage -- sounds much worse. It has only happened a few times

I just noticed BFG doesnt make a "E" rated 315 for a 16" wheel.

Size Weight Rating/PSI
LT285/75R16/E 3750@80
LT285/75R16/D 3305@65
LT295/75R16/D 3415@65
LT305/70R16/D 2910@50
LT315/75R16/D 3195@50

So thats why you guys are going Toyo? or stepping up to 17's?
