Transmission fluid temperature issues 2008 Ford e350 4x4 Sportsmobile

Just recently purchased a 2008 Ford e350 4x4 Sportsmobile. According to my Edge CTS monitor my transmission fluid temperature quickly runs up to 230 degrees when I get in the mountains. I need to find a way to get the temps closer to 200. Has anyone here had the same issue and if so what did you do to fix it? Thanks!

Lots of angles to approach this from, so to start: What's your axle ratio and tire size?

Edit: the next couple things to add would be a bigger trans cooler (the Tru Cool 40k is popular... and HUGE) and then a deeper/higher capacity pan. The higher capacity slows the rate that the temp will rise, but it can eventually still get up there. The bigger cooler will drop temps and keep them lower.

Are you towing or just the van?

Check your brakes all around to make sure they are not dragging.

Where are you located? (Consider adding to your profile)

Thanks for the advice. A 4x4 mechanic quoted me an HD cooler and pan with labor for $1300, which may be the way to go, just more than I was expecting to spend. I’m outside of Boulder, CO

I'd maybe defer the pan upgrade for now. It won't add cooling. Just a longer buffer for the temps to rise, but then you have more fluid to cool as well. That said.... There's other benefits, such as adding a drain plug if your pan doesn't have one, and better dent-resistance. But cooling isn't one fo them.

Upgrading to the Tru-Cool Max is pretty easy. This is one that almost anybody can DIY. Only basic tools needed, and something to trim on of the existing cooler support (tin snips, cutoff wheel, etc). Should cost you about $150 to DIY.

There's some older posts on here with DIY tips.

That all said.... You shouldn't be seeing 230F this time of year. Can you hear the engine kicking in? If that isn't working, trans temps will jump as much or more than the Engine coolant temps. If your fan clutch isn't working, take care of that first.
