I talked to Quigley recently and they said that their Ford straight axle and the Chevy IFS both have 49' turning curb to curb. Can anyone verify that with actual experience.

Thanks,
Steve

and every time I see this thread I try and make a mental reminder to go measure my turning radius, because it is TIGHT. I can approach any u-turn light in sacramento (seems a favorite method of traffic control in this town) without trepidation.

Someone should document an exact process to measure so that we all use the same process to document (e.g. 1. Start in a parking lot with as straight line painted rear wheels on the line, van perpendicular)

I'd like to do mine too, just to see what the reality is.

turning circle

the word says it all
you stand with your van in a parking lot mark your front wheels and turn your steering to max. release your clutch (if you have) or release the brakes and off you go.
once around back in your starting place you masure the diameter of the turning circle. and thats it.
remember the wheelbase! same vehicle, different wheelbase, different turning circle.

Turning Diameter

Just out of curiosity, I checked my old 2wd van and it was 43'. That was better than I expected. I also have a 2005 Diesel Jeep Liberty and the turning diameter on it was around 34'. Not much room to sleep in it though.

I talked to Craig at Salem Kroger today. He measured their set up and said that their standard 4 X 4 set up had a 46' curb to curb measurement. oclv

Scatter, I'm sorry, I missed your post when you made it, and only just now saw it.

I've never gotten around to measuring it yet, but yesterday I was struck again by how surprising it is. I was sitting in the front of one of the benches in the back while my girlfriend was driving. (my benches are two 6 foot benches in a dinette configuration)

She had to turn the van around in a neighborhood intersection and since I was sitting sideways, the view out of the back window was going one way while the view out of the front window was going the other way - very odd sensation.

So, this was a neighbohood three-way intersection and she was able to make a complete u-turn.

I actually measured the turning radius on my 2008 E350 Quigley today. It was 47' 9", but it still has the factory bicycle tires on it. That's not bad, but I am shopping for wheels and tires today and that may have some impact.
