Another data point: I've only got about 100 miles on my new Trutrac, but I've discovered that it chatters on hard turns, enough to rattle loose stuff. The installer (Randys ring and pinion) said I need to keep putting miles on until the 500 mile break in oil change, then switch to full synthetic. There is no adjustment on these, so all I can do is keep driving for now and hope it settles in.

Great thread, just what I was needing to read up on, thanks all. Having had factory lockers (3 hydraulic in Mercedes G-Wagen, 2 electronic in Cayenne) and 1 ARB air in the rear of Vandiana Jones, I wanted to read up more on True Trac LSD (F350 has factory e-locker rear, but I was trying to decide to go with ARB air or True Trac LSD in front). Since the truck won't be a daily driver, and while we'll be driving in snow and such, we'll be doing so with true winter tires (probably Nokian Hakkapelita's) which will help with grip, so the times when we'll need the locker are more in non-winter offroad travels. I think I'll stick with ARB air for my front and report back...

Selectable front and rear IF you can afford it.
If you do not have the budget for above install a mechanical locker in the rear and a selectable in the front.
I would not run mechanical lockers front and rear. Mechanical locker rear only.

Tell us more...why no mechanical (ie helical/gear LSD) in front?

"Broncohauler" and "Rememberthefallen" gave excellent explanations why a selectable locker in best in the front versus any mechanical locker in the front.

I went Eaton Truetrac front and Ox rear on my UJOR. Talked to Chris about it quite a bit and it has done everything and more.
Rocks, mud, sand, hill limbs, washouts... It has never even acted like it was going to get hung up.
He knows what he is doing.

When my stock limited slip started to go, I had a TrueTrack installed on my 2wd standard length E150 Club Wagon. I researched the hell out of it.Here's a quote from the Eaton faq
" Q: What kind of oil should I use? Can I use synthetic? Do I need friction additive/modifier?
A: A quality petroleum/mineral based oil works best in the Truetrac units. We do not recommend synthetic oil. Friction additive/modifier is not required."
If the unit has friction modifier in it now, that is one thing associated with the kind of noise you are getting. I tend to go with the factory recommends.
You'll figure it out. Best of luck.

Yes, I read that too. It currently has the break in oil installed by the builder with no friction modifier. Since I only have about 100 miles on it, it's too soon to really tell, hopefully it will break in and quiet down in a few hundred or thousand miles. Thanks...........
