Upgraded tires and wheels
I am looking at the SMB below:
In the photo (have not figured out how to post photos yet) I see that it doesn't have the upgraded wheels and tires.
1. I would love any insight into how important the upgrade package is. I understand they look cool. But other than full on mudding activities, I feel that the 4wd will still take me where I want to go.
2. Wont fuel mileage be better with the 'stock' wheels/tires? We plan to fully utilize the 4wd capabilities but also plan to cross the country over the next 12-24 months.
Listed SMB below. Thanks!!

Re: Upgraded tires and wheels
Its an '08 4x4. I assume it is a SMB conversion because of the 46g fuel tank. That being the case, it has the F450 brake package which also means it has 17 " wheels vs the stock 16". If you look at the photo of the maroon '06 from BC, I think those are the stock wheel design Ford was using. Call SMB to be sure.

Not sure what 'upgraded wheels and tires' means.
But if you search around here, one thing becomes clear. Given the weight of a typical SMB, tires can be a weak link and a safety concern if they are not rated to handle a 10k pound vehicle.
There is a wide range of personal preferences in terms of type and style or tire/wheel setups, but almost all are E rated to handle loads of up to 3,750lbs per tire.
Good luck with the purchase.

Upgraded tires and wheels
That makes sense. I will be sure to verify that the setup can handle the weight.
Thanks!!

Re: Upgraded tires and wheels
Steve,
If you need any help, I live across the bay, 5 min. Maybe we could meet up if you pick it up.
I am not familiar with this van.

Re: Upgraded tires and wheels
All.
I spoke with Lynn at sportsmobile today. She said an elderly woman owns this and she bought it for a possible earthquake. Apparently the wheels and tires are stock.
Does this mean that the rating are too low for the weight of this van?
Also, Lynn said this is a quigley and not a sportsmobile. Seems weird since it thought I read that SMB stopped doing quigley conversions before 2008 and the side paint says "sportsmobile"

Re: Upgraded tires and wheels
You can still buy a Quigley 4x4 van and have Sportsmobile do the camper conversion. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Re: Upgraded tires and wheels
Here is what I have from the owner on the current tires. I know they're not the large tires that most of you have on your vans. My primary concern is whether these are rated well enough to be on a heavy SMB van.
I have read posts that require E rating. I don't see E. Maybe the M 118 is the rating
Thanks for you input.
