Water Crossings

Thought this would be a fun topic to get some fellow 4x4 van owners opinions on.

Basically, how deep of crossings do you feel good about? Deepest you have gone?

My worries is that with the secondary battery on the passengar rail, i don't really want that getting too wet and shorting. On the drivers rail i have my air compressor and espar pump, which i guess could also short out, but pretty sure those connections are water tight. And worse case I plow a fuse in my auxiliary fuse block.

With all this snow in California, gotta believe some waterways are going to be as high as ever come spring time when we are all out and about. Suppose anything about 2 feet and less is pretty good?

Bonus points for relating it to the water crossing on the Mojave Road, as that is the definite one I foresee running into in the near future!

Double bonus points for pictures!

Cheers,
Brian

Well Claude in his ventures to Alaska has a few shots in his trip report which is one of my favorites in part because of the pictures. One of the members started this post:

Hopefully you won't try this that member spurious linked to in that post:

During Claude's (Pschitt) trip he did some stuff I'd be more incline to skip:

As far as the Mojave water crossings you just need to look at the poles and how far they stick out of the water. The first crossing was basically inches deep. In the second pick my diffs were 1/2 way submerged. This was a fairly dry year.

3+ feet with no issues, as long as the brakes and hubs are cool. I did hit the stream crossing once when everything was hot, and sucked some water into my front bearings.

Doesn't seem to hurt the battery. 12-v won't short in fresh water.

We have to cross a lot of "potholes" here. Some of them are pretty deep. This pictures are made on main roads / route national. No joke

Even if my rig had a UJOR 6 inch lift I'd be very weary of crossing those deep puddles lol
Ya'll be brave AF!

I sure wish ARB or Safari would put together a snorkel kit for these vans. I thought for sure the icelandic vans would have one but haven't found one.

The Afton Canyon water crossing was almost up to the door sills on my van in February. Check your axle and t-case breathers. I went slow in the deep water since I didn't want the water to well up in the engine dog house cover.

I wouldn't go deeper than the bottom of the front headlight without a snorkel. That's where the air intake sits. Game over if you suck water into the engine.

Note to self: bottom of the headlight!
