What do I need to know to do my brakes?

Aside from all the threads I've read regarding rotor selection, wheel stud selection, drilling out holes for the studs, etc., what do I need to know to do the front brakes (rotors and pads) on the front of an 2005 SMB 4x4 with ProRock 60? I've never done the front bakes myself, but prefer to do as much work as I can myself.

I assume I pull the hub off as if I'm servicing the bearings (thanks for the great write up Badger!). How does the rotor separate from the hub? I'm guessing it will be obvious once I get to that point, but I prefer to learn from others experience when possible.

Thanks,
Phil

Re: What do I need to know to do my brakes?

I believe that the front brakes are like most others (not sure though).

Jack up van
Take off wheel
Remove the 2 bolts holding the brake caliper
Tie the caliper up to avoid hanging it by the brake line
Remove outboard pad
Pop hood open and remove the brake fluid reservoir cap
Use a large C-clamp positioned on the old inboard pad and on the backside of the caliper
Tighten c-clamp until brake cylinder is flush with the caliper (this provides the needed space for new pads)
Remove old inboard pad
Put new pads in

Remove rotor if you are taking them to get turned

Don't forget to replace brake fluid reservoir cap.
You should not have to mess with the hub assembly at all to do the brakes.

Re: What do I need to know to do my brakes?

I would add:

break lug nuts loose
Jack up van
Take off wheel
Remove the 2 bolts holding the brake caliper
[...]

Don't want to be jerking the van around trying to break them loose while it's up on a jack. I don't get my rotors looked at unless there is a problem, but if you're upgrading rotors that won't matter.

Take photos!

Re: What do I need to know to do my brakes?

Aren't the front rotors different to remove than the rear. In the rear, the rotors just come off once the caliper is out of the way. Up front, aren't the studs pressed into the rotors and the rotors somehow attached to (behind) the hubs (requiring removal of the hub to get the rotor off?)? I could be way off here which is why I'm asking. The rear brakes are a piece of cake to do, but just haven't worked on the front.

I bought new rotors and pads already (went with Power Stop for both). Rotors that are on there now are not in good enough shape to turn and re-use.

Re: What do I need to know to do my brakes?

Since the rotors are spec'ed from a '95-'98 F350, I searched on how to replace them on a F350 and found the following helpful threads:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/73233 ... e-out.html
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/91000 ... te-up.html

Pretty much what I thought it would be. Now I just know what I'm getting into. My bearings are due to be re-packed in about 5k more miles & brakes are shot, so think I'll hang on to the rotor and pads and do it all at once at the 60k mile mark.
