Your thoughts about rubber?

Hi !

Now I am planning new wheels and Tires for my Van I wanted to have your thoughts about the Open Country A/T from Toyo?

I searched the forum and they are mentioned quite often but not so much about how they are in use.

I will be having titchy 245/75 R16 (around 31" would that be correct?)... being only a 2WD

Thanx for your thoughts and suggestions...

Re: Your thoughts about rubber?

Saabman,

I owned an auto and tire shop (got rid of it before getting the SMB, as luck would have it ) and my manager would swear by the Toyos. I personally am running the Nitto Terra Grappler LT265/75/16 E on my SMB. They have a good street ride and have a tread pattern similar to the Toyos, so I would expect that your ride would be as good or better with the Toyos. Hope that helps.

Best-
Steve

Saabman,

Lots of kudos on the Toyos!!! Many of my friends that run Toyo Open Country are very happy on the wear and ride quality.

Re: Your thoughts about rubber?

As a AT the Toyo is great. I wanted more grab so I swaped to a Cooper STT in 265/75/16. Next summer I will be stepping up to the STT in a 315.

Re: Your thoughts about rubber?

They are a good tire for most conditions, including snow.

They are NOT good for ice. Also not so great in sand. Siping the tires can slightly improve ice traction.

For winter driving I run Toyo M55 tires. Probably will pull off the Open Country tires next week.

Re: Your thoughts about rubber?

compare them to the Nitto Terra Grapplers ...... I did this search on best tires on this forum a few months ago and my notes show mixed reviews on the toyos ... about 50 / 50 pro con. The main areas of contention were road noise and tire life.

I settled on the Nitto because I couldn't get what i wnated in BFG AT........ BFG seems the best and Nitto close second.

Re: Your thoughts about rubber?

Again our SMB is for touring not off roading.

Tires are: Michelin LTX M/S (highway all season). We replaced the OEM General (?) tires at 32k miles and now have 7 years and 70,000 miles on the Michelin's. Still have ample tread left. Will probably replace with same in spring of 2011 because of age (tires will be 8 years old). Very happy w ride quality, lack of road noise, handling and breaking (compared to the OEM's).

Re: Your thoughts about rubber?

Yeah taking time though as the rims are coming over from the US...

I have had BFGs on my Pajero (Dodge Raider) and they are ok-ish but not suited to the 2WD van and not so good in the snow either...
