Can I mount anything to the W73 rear step?

Just getting to know more about my van which is a 2013 Sportsmobile regular body sprinter.

The spec sheet includes the W73 rear step option. It appears as if there are some holes in the top platform that have plastic grommets in them.

Is this step strong enough to have something mounted to it?

I.e. a swing away bike rack? Cargo rack?

Not an expert on this topic - but I believe I'd replace with some steel bolts or rivets if I was adding "load" to something held on by plastic -

I would say no. The grommets simply secure the plastic cover to the unit. Under the cover is a metal "shelf" that creates the step and it's pretty thin metal. If I recall correctly, it's two thin layers pressed together and spot welded.
You can pop those grommets out and remove the cover to check it out. I had to do this to straighten mine out after it had been bent at the corner.
