Custom Sink Graywater Tank

I have a 2011 Sprinter with the large DEF tank, which means there is no room under the sink for a gray water tank. We have to put a portable tank on the ground whenever we stop (for lunch or whatever) to collect sink gray water. This kind of makes us conspicuous in lot's of places.

I am in the process of making a custom graywater tank that does fit under the sink. It had to be shaped to fit in the space under the sink. It will hold about 3.75 gallons. This is just enough for us to prepare dinner and do dishes. Which is ok by me.

Building the tank has been a "labor of love" as I had to cut styrofoam blocks to fit in the available space and then epoxyglass the whole thing, dissolve the styrofoam with Acetone, install a drain, and a bunch of other things to get this to work. Here's some pics, it's not pretty, but it's going to work:

Oh, I was hoping nobody would ask...it's kind of embarrassing. But I ilke a good project.

Let's see, I probably have 2 hours in cutting styrofoam and hot gluing it together to get the basic shape, then an hour or so carving it (so that it has a low spot for the drain, an indentation for the rear leaf spring support, and another indentation for a floor bolt), 8 hours in epoxyglass layup....another couple hours in dissolving the styrofoam inside the tank. 1 hour putting in a pvc drain pipe (3/4 inch for a fast drain). I have started the job of putting plumbers tape (with chafing material) under the van to support the tank and I have probably another 2 hours before I get it in.

So that's about 17 hours so far. There is also a few hours in shopping for parts.

Patience is probably a prerequisite for something like this.

I found out during a leak test today that it will hold 5 gallons instead of the 3.75 that I incorrectly calculated.

oh, and I also wired in a water detector at 3/4 of the way up so I will know when it's almost full.

The good thing is that epoxy resin does no harm to styrofoam. Acetone and lacquer thinner will attack it badly though.
