Name the Part!
Driving up a mountain road today in 4x4 when I hear a loud noise, metal hitting the road, grinding, and a drivetrain that seizes up. Got out and found this part on the ground. Eventually got it out of 4x4 and limped to a parking lot for a tow. 2018 Sprinter with <40k miles. Lost the van for six miles this due to a nox sensor and now this. Pretty disappointing.
In any case, what fell off?

Sitting here in the dark next to the fire I have no idea. I’ll get under my NCV3 on the creeper tomorrow and see if I can identify it. What is the diameter?

When I bought my boat there was a base for a defunct ski pylon installed into the floor. This looks a lot like that. I removed it several summers ago because I was tired of jamming my toe on it. Here is a pic. 6” diameter.
Perhaps it was already on the road and just flipped up into your van?

Drivetrain seize up - looks like an axle cover and a bearing fried at one of four drive wheels???

This is a good guess. It’s in the shop today so we’ll know today or tomorrow, and I’ll report back.

If it is the cover, it will be interesting to hear the how it came off as it seems there are six fasteners.

Apparently this is a CV joint cover and the joint has known issues, including failures in situations remarkably similar mine. Definitely something to be concerned about on other vehicles. https://sprinter-source.com/forums/i...threads/62884/
The bolts on that cover somehow came out. I found two in our driveway in the spring and asked around to source it. Even took the van to the dealer with the bolt No luck.seems inconceivable that these could work their way out like this. And, that the dealer would fail to identify them.

Wow, just read the Sprinter Forum thread you linked - nothing heart warming there. Sounds like requesting IFA axle may at least provide aa longer interval.

Here's the report on what happened and a picture. So five very long bolts with loctite all came out, and the sixth sheered off. Wow
