1993 E250 Axle Identification....

Hell0 All-

I'm trying to figure out what axle/gearing I have in my van. It's a 1993 E250 with the original axle/gearing(as far as I can tell). It's an open diff and semi-floating.

Unfortunately the door decal from Sportsmobile is of no help and the axle tag is missing....

Any help here?

Thanks,

BB

Is there a factory Ford decal in the driver's door jamb? Of so, there should be an axle code listed on that label.

There are several "vin lookup" sites that will provide you lots of great specs on your vin (the good ones won't hassle you for an email). I found the specs for my 1993 ford that way. Can't remember which but they're a dime a dozen. Maybe check the California DMV site if you want more legit sites - they reference car history sites

If you just want to determine what gearing you have.....

On level ground with the opposite wheel well chocked, and with a jack stand under the axle jack up one rear wheel with the van in neutral.

Spin the raised wheel one revolution and count the turns of the driveshaft; it's likely going to be either 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10 turns depending on gearing.

So then open it up

Drain the fluid and take the cover off.

Snap a pic of the diff cover and post it here.

Do you want to keep your gearing the same?

Just took a look, going off of that photo it looks like mine is a Dana 60.

I'm undecided about gearing. We've gone from 225/75/16 to 265/75/16.....so perhaps it would make sense to account for the larger tires?

I'm heading into the shop later today to get a couple of things worked on....I'll have them take a look and see what my options are. At the very least I want to upgrade to LSD.....but ideally I'd like a manual locker.

Dana 60....as expected....

The carrier break for a Dana 60 is 4.10 and down....so 4.10, 3.73 and 3.55 use one P/N and gearing lower than 4.10 requires another P/N. ..Important when you order the locker.

You'll also need the spline count on the axle to order the new locker/LSD. My rear Dana 60 is a 32 spline. My front old kingpin Dana 60 is 35 spline. If you have 32 spline rear than your locker/LSD options may be a bit limited, but you can change the axles to 35 spline for many choices.

With both rear wheels off the ground spin one wheel forward, if the other wheel also spins forward you have an LSD. If the other wheel spins opposite rotation then you have an open diff.

With one rear wheel off the ground if the wheel is difficult to spin that also suggests that you have a clutch type LSD.
