1995 Sportsmobile Dodge 3500 EB body seam splitting...

Hi folks,

First post and a look through the archives has led me to posting an unusual problem, it seems. I have a Dodge 3500 converted by Sportsmobile with an explorer top. It is an extended wheelbase (EB). The problem I am having is the vertical body seam on the drivers side is splitting apart. The back side is coming out an 1/8 to 1/4". Has anyone else experienced this? I guess I'm curious if its really a problem. I will post a picture a bit later today.

Thanks for any insights. Its hard to tell how the EB version is put together body wise.

Joe

Yes! That most likely is a serious problem.

Your Dodge van is a Unibody design, with a small stamped-steel subframe below. It does not ride on a real frame like the Ford and Chevy vans. The walls on the Dodge are actually load bearing. Sometimes, window and other cutout placements weaken the walls too much. Likewise, heavy trailers can also damage the structure. I'd take it to a good body shop ASAP.

The Sprinter vans area also a Unibody, but MB is outlines very clearly were the walls can be modified, to prevent structural issues.
