2WD off road
How far can you go , have you gone, off the beaten path with 2WD, A//T tires and a locking diff?

Re: 2WD off road
Every place I've ever gone I could do in 2wd with a locking differential, if I had the ground clearance.
That said, the low range makes a lot of it much more comfortable.

Simple and easy fireroads. No major testing yet. Have done Bald Mountain and Lookout Mountain in the Mammoth Lakes area and also cruised arounf the Dove Springs area.

Re: 2WD off road
All depends on your actual use.
Getting somewhere in 2WD is easy. It's the getting back that can be the difference. I've seen 2wd vehicles go plenty of places they don't really belong.
FWIW, even if you can get there in 2WD, it's typically much more stressful on the vehicle, and the trail, than if your vehicle is in 4WD. In 2WD, it's not atypical to have to use much more throttle, and subsequently spin tires to get places 4WD will just walk up.

Re: 2WD off road
I've been in situations where it took 4-wheel drive to get me out. I've been in situations where I had to lock the front Diff to get me out. But the winch has been an asset. Provided you can hook to something, most 2WD's with a winch can go where standard 4x4's can go...just a PITA to rig the winch to get you out. The claim is 4 wheel drive just gets you stuck easier. Not in my opinion

Re: 2WD off road
I'm not really looking for huge adventure, maybe with a 20 year old van, but not with a 2 year old. But people do lift and put some huge tires under them, is it more for the look or is the added clearance a benefit?

For some it is the look, for others it is the clearance, for some it is both.

Re: 2WD off road
As far as I understand it the 2wd can't run larger/wider tires without doing a lift job. This has everything to do with the ability to get into & out of locations. I want to run a taller & wider tire but it rubs the front fender wells. Can you lengthen the coil springs in the front by 3" to get that clearance? Dever says that he will cut any length of spring but I have to figure out what length I can stick in there without bending the beams. Does any know?
Woot.........

Re: 2WD off road
2WD can go until it gets stuck, and that's it. 4WD I feel like in most situations you can get unstuck by driving it. Been a long time since I had a 2WD though so YMMV...
