Battery Vent Gasket

The rope-like gadgets around my two battery exterior vents need replacing. (She's a 2006 Ford) Anyone have an idea of what material to use and/or where to get it?

Vents? At least on my build, SMB seemed to just zip tie the rope handles down to the frame. It's probable OK but I'd rather and have installed ratchet straps around the house batteries (I have two house batteries in marine boxes with tops). Not sure if that answers your question.

Re: Battery Vent Gasket

I have two exterior vents that allow the two house batteries to vent their explosive gases to the outside. Each vent has a small cover/grill over the opening and the gasket behind the covers are deteriorating and need replacement. The gasket are a rope-like black materiail but I can't find anything like it at the auto stores. Seems like there ought to be an obvious solution!

Mine had butyl sealing it -- if you have black gooey stuff, that's likely what it is. You can get butyl "rope" at NAPA and other auto stores. I would think you could just use silicone caulk, too.

As an aside, my battery vent had slats on it, but was otherwise open to the outside. I cut a small piece of insect screen and put it behind the vent in order to help keep bugs out of the van.

Bingo, you got it. But where do you find an O ring that large?

I got some at McMaster-Carr. I think they were about $4 each.
