Door cable repair kit.

I searched using a coupla parameters but didn't find anything. 'toopid me.

The rear, passenger side, cargo door handle pulls but doesn't allow the door to open. I have hyper extended it at least once. Didn't know about the cable rubber ends breaking until I watch a youtube vid. This is one vendor,

https://www.fgtmotorsport.com/collec...le-repair-kits

Google brings up hundreds more.

Anyone done repairs to the cables? Or what the best fix?
Thanks in advance.
Regis

I tried these, or something very similar, and did not have good luck. They would work for a time or two then slip off. I ended up biting the bullet and replacing with new Ford cables.

Yeah, I'm hearing ya. The OE lasted 20 yr or so. A new latch assembly is ~80$.
I'll roll the dice on these for 12.95$ and see what happens. Life always seems to cost poor people more.

This brand is supposed to be the bees knees. We'll see. I'll report next weekend.

I had the same problem with one of the side doors.....the plastic end of the cable breaks and the handle does nothing.

I replaced the disintegrated plastic cable end with a metal one from ebay....there are zillions of these on Ebay.....been working fine....

My usual pick-n-pull haunt is the one in Newark off Mowry.

Fer some strange reason the rear cargo doors get stripped of the mechanicals before I get there. But then I'm at the mercy of old parts.

I could get new cables that'll be good for another twenty yrs I suppose.

Not too difficult

Mine had failed at the latch hardware on the rear driver side door. As GTRV saw fit to stuff an air conditioner unit in the door my hand couldn't fit very well. I drilled out the Ford rivets so I could pull the handle assembly out, installed the metal cable housing ends and reinstalled the pull handle using rivnuts. I used the Rivet nuts in case I needed to go back in there... (not all my repairs are one and done) but I have had no issues since then.

I have both my rear doors apart right now to redo the storage cavities. I'm not having any cable issues, but with my van being a 1998 wonder if I should proactively replace the plastic ends with metal ones before I close it all up. Thoughts?

Probably wouldn't hurt although fixing the one in my van wasn't too stressful...and my van was a 2008.....interesting thought it the failure is age related or not...

I would...

Mine had failed prior to purchasing the van. I couldn't understand why the top latch was failing to engage, causing the rear doors to rattle noisily on dirt roads. If you're already in there, why not spend a couple bucks and swap out the housing guide? In my case, the mounting hardware for the in-door AC unit actually caused the failure of the stock cable guide by pushing sideways against it, cracking it.
I'm no expert on the barn doors (rear or side) and still have a rattle from somewhere in my side doors that I have spent hours trouble shooting. 4 hinges and three latches seem to create a lot of variables and opportunities for noises. As I can't duplicated the rattles till we're bombing down washboarded roads I am resigned to living with them.
