Door Hinge Pin removal for spare carrier

I'm trying(really, really hard) to remove the rear door hinge pin to install an Aluminess spare carrier. I've followed their directions pretty well but the punch/3lb sledge trick doesn't seem to be doing much.

Any ideas for a different approach? Or....any ideas for what type of business I should head into to get some help. Body shop?

Thanks!

BB

You did drill the bottom of the pin to remove the peened over section?

Once drilled, it should come out with a few really hard whacks. I put heavy corrugated against the van body to protect the paint. Maybe you need a bigger hammer?

Yeah, drilled the peened section off and up into the hinge body a tad. I'm using a 3lb hammer and several different size punches. Frustrating to say the least!

I used a big piece of closed cell foam to protect the paint.....I was more than a little nervous there!

Use a bigger hammer.

I was too dainty with mine, gave up thinking I missed a step, and asked the body shop for help (had to go back anyways for a little touch up work). They went straight for the 10# mallet and it came right out.

Brian, i had the same issue and no luck.
quick call to aluminess and was advised to use an air hammer...
picked a cheap one up at home depot.
then just hook it up to the air compressors at The Path.
easy peasy...

Yes, I had to use an air hammer on mine, you need a tool in the air compressor that is pointy enough to fit up there without jamming in the bottom of the hole.

I bent several punches, the air hammer popped it out in 5 seconds!

Re: Door Hinge Pin removal for spare carrier

Glad to hear you are installing the carrier. I had it hanging around in my barn for like 5 years.

Good luck on the hinge pin!

Re: Door Hinge Pin removal for spare carrier

I was just about ready to give up on the whole project. I had tried everything: 3lb sledge, 5lb sledge, air hammer with 3 different punches and 2 different compressors. After all of that failed I was just about ready to sell the thing to someone else and let it be their problem.

Then I realized.....I haven't tried one thing: enlisting my father. The man can fix anything. Took him about 5 minutes and just the right combo of hammer weight and punch size.

Should have made the drive over there weeks ago.
