A little, but a bigger piece would have been better. I was working behind a gas station in 30mph winds and it was dark and bitter cold. By the time I realized it was too small, my fingers were frozen and I had to get back inside to warm up. I should have covered the xmission cooler too, but instead I just kept driving to stay warm. But yes, it made a difference.
it most definitely makes a difference. however since I have a stock bumper, I can actually slide a piece of cardboard inside the bumper and in between the tranny cooler and radiator. that way very little air gets through to cool. the way artictravlers setup is just in front of grill which is doing very minimal. air always takes the path of least resistance. if the cardboard isn't right in front of the radiator or blocking the entire area of grill like the pic bbasso posted its impact is far less.
disclaimer: if you are doing a mod like this you must pay attention to your temps. cause once your on the road for a while or it gets warmer, you will overheat and possibly ruin stuff.
as cold as its been lately even our civic wouldn't get up to operating temps. I had to block 75% of the radiator to get some heat happening for the wifey.

Received my grill insert, the fit is great and goes on super easy with no drilling. First picture shows all vents open on the mild winter days, while last two pics show the vent covers on super cold days.
One issue...there's no hood latch access. Not a huge deal with how easy it comes on and off, i may even cut my own access. My kids won't freeze now!
Here are shots of the two rectangle covers on.
