EB rear skid plate???

Seems I remember seeing something about someone making a rear skid plate for the Econoline van. We are switching from a RB to an EB and sometimes go places I am afraid we might scrape the rear of the EB van.

I thought I saw where some company made skid plates for the rear end of these vans bit a Internet search turns up nothing. The van has a XL storage box underneath and wanted to maybe put something between that and the Aluminess rear bumper to keep from scraping when driving through stream beds or arroyos.

TIA Bob

You are probably thinking of this?

I suspect it might not be compatible with your SMB underfloor storage. Plus, your storage box should be plenty stout. I off-road pretty hard, have scraped mine (from NorthLeftCoast) plenty, but have yet to dent it.

Might consider having one fabricated. I made a front skid plate out of balsa wood- bright it to the shop to duplicate, and it bolted on perfectly.

Thanks Felix. I think I might do that as well, just have one made.

The SMB box on my old van was pretty thin, almost like galvanized tin air ducts! Don’t think it would have taken much in the way of hits.

A receiver hitch will help brush off most impacts before they get to your box, unless you high center or something. But if you drag your tail end the hitch works well as a protector.

If you go this route, I would suggest making it a bolt-on so it can be easily removed if /when warranted.
I like the suggestion BrianW makes, incorporate your trailer hitch when you design since it certainly would be up to task.
When you complete your project, I for one would be interested to see pic's of the end result Bob, so please follow up to satisfy our curiosity.

The only thing I've dragged is the bottom of my aluminess bumper. Has a tendency to rip off the trailer plug. The hitch also takes most of the impact. In all the years I found how you approach and drive over rough terrain is the most important. I have hit the rear differential several times but rarely drag the tail.
